Happy Mac Dre Day

Posted: 05 Jul 2020 04:45 PM PDT

To me, he's bigger than Pac or Big. No record exec, mtv or fancy label connect made him a legend, he went out on his own and did it himself. He never held anything back and just rapped, danced and said whatever the fuck he felt like. That's a true artist to me. I met the man myself about 4 months before he was murdered. He used to throw parties at his house in Sacramento and invited all the neighborhood folks over. Never pretentious, always had fun and made sure everyone else was having fun. Not a lot of people know but he signed so many artists to Thizz Ent regardless of their "image" and said that he wanted to make sure that artists from every walk of life were able to tell their stories. These parties had damn near every race represented and it was all love. Thizz in Peace Mac Dre

[DISCUSSION] Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty (10 Years Later)

Posted: 05 Jul 2020 03:06 AM PDT

FROM WIKIPEDIA:

Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty is the debut studio album by American rapper Big Boi, released on July 5, 2010, by Purple Ribbon Records and Def Jam Recordings. It is his first solo album, following his work as a member of the hip hop duo OutKast. Production for the album took place primarily at Stankonia Recording Studio in Atlanta during 2007 to 2010 and was handled by several record producers, including Organized Noize, Scott Storch, Salaam Remi, Mr. DJ, and André 3000, among others.

The album's development was impeded by a dispute between Big Boi and his former label, Jive Records, over creative and commercial differences. Rooted in Southern hip hop, Sir Lucious Left Foot has been noted by music writers for its bounce and bass-heavy sound, layered production, and assorted musical elements. Its lyrics deal with boasting, sex, social commentary, and club themes, featuring Big Boi's clever wordplay and versatile flow.

Following a heavily delayed release, the album debuted at number three on the US Billboard 200, selling 62,000 copies in its first week, and spent 13 weeks on the chart. It also charted internationally and produced two singles, including the UK top-40 hit "Shutterbugg". Sir Lucious Left Foot received rave reviews from music critics, who praised its varied sound and Big Boi's lyricism, and was included in numerous year-end top albums lists. Big Boi promoted the album with an international tour in 2010. As of September 2010, it has sold 175,000 copies in the United States.

How do you think this album has aged after 10 years?

If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye (you can get more specific but that's enough imo). And then someone will respond with X, Y, and Z

You can also recommend an artist/project/scene

Example: You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats.

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

Also the more descriptive you guys are with your posts the easier it is to help you find what you want, just stating an artists name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

Look through past posts here

ALSO please check out this thread for a list of some of the most popular recommendation requests and the suggestions provided

[DISCUSSION] 50 Cent - Power of the Dollar (20 Years Later)

Posted: 04 Jul 2020 05:56 AM PDT

FROM WIKIPEDIA:

Power of the Dollar is the unreleased studio album by American hip hop recording artist 50 Cent. The album was originally set to be released as his major-label debut in 2000 by Columbia Records. However, the album's release was cancelled after Columbia discovered that 50 Cent was struck by nine bullets in a shooting that took place two months before the album was set to release. Because of this, 50 Cent was later dropped from the label. The album features guest appearances from Destiny's Child, Noreaga, Dave Hollister, Bun B and The Madd Rapper. The album's production was handled by Trackmasters, Red Spyda, Sha Self, DJ Scratch and Erick Sermon, among other producers.

The lead single, "Thug Love" featuring Destiny's Child, was released on September 21, 1999. Days before 50 Cent was scheduled to film its music video, he was attacked by a gunman in the infamous shooting incident that left him with nine gunshot wounds and gave him his dimple scar; an event that 50 Cent often references in his lyrics. While hospitalized, he signed a publishing deal with Columbia Records. However, he was dropped from the label after it was discovered that he had been shot. The track, "Ghetto Qu'ran (Forgive Me)", has been speculated to be the reason for the shooting.

The third and final single, "Your Life's on the Line", was released in 1999. The song was produced by Terrence Dudley, and was perceived as a diss song to Ja Rule, which would begin their highly publicised feud on records. 50 mocks Ja's famous catchphrase "Murdaa!", on the chorus of the song, rapping "Murdaa, I don't believe you/Murdaa, Fuck around and leave you/Murdaa, I don't believe you/Murda Murda, your life's on the line". A music video for this song was released, which was also the only song with a music video of the whole album. The song would later be included as a bonus track on 50's officially released debut album Get Rich or Die Tryin'.

How do you think this album had aged after 20 years?

Q: Aren't those numbers kind of low for Childish Gambino?

A: Childish Gambino's "3.15.20" officially released on a Sunday, a week after it was premiered on his website, this caused him to lose out on two days of sales as well as losing some interest due to the delayed release.

Q: Where can I find last year's list?

A: 2019 list, 2018 list, 2017 list, 2016 list

[DISCUSSION] Childish Gambino - Culdesac (10 Years Later)

Posted: 03 Jul 2020 09:03 AM PDT

FROM WIKIPEDIA:

Culdesac is the fifth mixtape by American rapper Childish Gambino better known as Donald Glover, released July 3, 2010. The entire mixtape was self-produced with assistance from Community composer, Ludwig Göransson. Like his other mixtapes, Culdesac was released for free download.

When interviewed by Complex about what influenced his production, Glover had this to say: "Well, I listened to a lot of indie music. I feel like a lot rap heads don't really listen to a whole bunch of music and are closing themselves off. People feel that if you like T.I. then you won't like Animal Collective or if you like Jeezy you'd probably hate Lykke Li, and I don't think that's the case. Hip-hop is the most eclectic type of music ever, because you can stay up on anything. If the beat is tight, the beat is tight. I'm from Atlanta, so I love Outkast. I listened to a lot of their stuff when I was younger. I listened to the Wu-Tang album. I listen to "All That I Got Is You" by Ghostface like a billion times. I remember being a kid and hearing that and being like, "Oh shit, that's like me." [Laughs.] My cousin and I used to sleep in the same bed. [Laughs.] It was the first time I ever felt something. I listen to Kanye of course. I feel like Kanye paved the way for people like Drake, Wiz Khalifa, and rappers who rap about their life. Not every rapper is from the streets, yo. Jay-Z's story is not my story and I say that in the album. I love Jay-Z, but I can't tell that story."

Culdesac received positive reviews from critics. Chris Lee of the Los Angeles Times praised the album, saying: "The album's alterna-rock-augmented beats and emo-level of emotional rawness, meanwhile, are shot through with surprisingly legitimate R&B vocals also sung by Glover, making 'Culdesac' an unexpected delight: a sung-rapped cri de coeur that's as accomplished as any indie hip-hop released this year."

The Huffington Post gave the album generally positive reviews, stating: "It becomes clear from listening to "Culdesac" that Glover thinks he's on the highest creative level possible, a la Tupac, and maybe in his own way he is."

In his consumer guide for MSN Music, Robert Christgau quippedly asserted that Childish Gambino "brings more skills to the rap game than any pretender in years, fellow actor Drake included", and wrote of his musicianship, "His rhymes startle and amuse, his flow bubbles and snaps, his beats always get him where he's going, and on the expert pop song 'Got This Money' he hits the high notes on his own."

How do you think this mixtape had aged after 10 years?

[DISCUSSION] Rapping before Gil Scott-Heron

Posted: 03 Jul 2020 04:19 PM PDT

My personal favorite is Dead, a 1958 "monster mash" type song by a high school doo-wop group called the Poets. It rhymes, it has a remarkably tight flow for being so old, and it's entertaining. It literally sounds like if I had rapped in high school, right on down to the nasal voice of the lead vocalist. So, does this count as rapping and as hip-hop? Hip hop didn't really exist as a genre except for incidental examples like this until Gil Scott-Heron showed up imo.
