[DISCUSSION] Kurtis Blow - Kurtis Blow (40 Years Later)

Posted: 01 Jul 2020 08:30 AM PDT

Kurtis Blow is the self-titled debut album by American rapper Kurtis Blow. It was released on September 29, 1980, by Mercury Records. The record includes the song "The Breaks", which was often sampled later in hip-hop records, mainly for its introduction made by Blow's a cappella vocal, and for the drum break, giving a wordplay dimension to the title. "Rappin' Blow, Pt. 2" was issued as a single that had a do-it-yourself B-side, the instrumental version. "Takin' Care of Business" is one of the first hip hop and rock 'n' roll crossover attempts.

Side one

  1. "Rappin' Blow, Pt. 2" (Kurtis Blow, Robert Ford, Miller, J.B. Moore, Larry Smith) 4:42
  2. "The Breaks" (Kurtis Blow, Ford, Moore, Russell Simmons, Smith) 7:43
  3. "Way Out West" (Moore) 7:43

Side two

  1. "Throughout Your Years" (Kurtis Blow, Moore, Waring) 5:21
  2. "Hard Times" (Jimmy Bralower, Moore, Russell Simmons, Smith, Waring) 4:38
  3. "All I Want in This World (Is to Find That Girl)" (Moore) 5:00
  4. "Takin' Care of Business" (Randy Bachman) 5:31

CD bonus tracks

  1. "Christmas Rappin'" (Kurtis Blow, Ford, Moore) 3:57
  2. "Breaks [Instrumental]" (Kurtis Blow, Ford, Moore, Simmons, Smith) 5:52

Posted: 30 Jun 2020 11:51 AM PDT

From Jeff Weiss:

Bad news to report: 03 Greedo has been denied parole. He won't be eligible again until next June.

A tragic & punitive decision that highlights how evil our criminal justice system is. One of the most gifted artists of his generation is losing his life over a drug charge #Free03

Spoke to Greedo yesterday before they took away his phone privileges for the next 40 days. Texas prisons are a special rung of Hell. At his facility, they're using Covid to deny inmates all liberties and human rights. Rather than clear out the jails, they're tightening control.

[DISCUSSION] Polo G - Die a Legend (One Year Later)

Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:23 PM PDT

Die a Legend is the debut studio album by American rapper Polo G, released on June 7, 2019, by Columbia Records. It features his US top 20 single "Pop Out", as well as the remix to the track titled "Pop Out Again" featuring Lil Baby and Gunna. The songs "Finer Things", "Battle Cry" and "Deep Wounds" were also released prior to the album. The album received acclaim from music critics.

Critical reception

The album received acclaim from critics upon release. Sheldon Pearce of Pitchfork rated the album 8.3/10, and gave it the "Best New Music" award. In his review, he stated that Polo "blends pop and drill with ease and delivers a standout Chicago street rap debut that is meticulously crafted and honestly told." Riley Wallace of HipHopDX said "There is a beautifully crafted blend of honesty and tragedy within [Die a Legend]." HipHopDX users gave a unanimous review of a perfect 5/5 for the album.

Commercial performance

Die a Legend debuted at number six on the US Billboard 200 chart, with 38,000 album-equivalent units in its first week, becoming Polo G's first top-ten album. In its second week, the album dropped to number seven on the chart, earning 29,000 album-equivalent units. In its third week, the album dropped to number ten on the chart, earning 24,000 album-equivalent units that week. On September 16, 2019, the album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for combined sales and album-equivalent units of over 500,000 units in the United States.

[DISCUSSION] The Internet - Ego Death (5 Years Later)

Posted: 30 Jun 2020 07:06 AM PDT

Ego Death is the third studio album by American R&B band the Internet. It was released on June 26, 2015, through Odd Future and distributed by Columbia Records. The album was supported by the singles "Special Affair" and "Girl". Ego Death was nominated at the 2016 Grammy Awards for Best Urban Contemporary Album.

Critical reception

Andy Kellman of AllMusic said, "The majority of Ego Death is tighter. Bennett has refined her songwriting without reducing the candid approach that colors her past compositions. Additionally, the tangents are fewer and more substantive." Pat Levy of Consequence of Sound said, "In addition to their more fully formed sound, one of the more exciting things about The Internet is the music's point of view." Michael J. Warren of Exclaim! said, "Ego Death frees the Internet from Odd Future connotations and R&B norms; it's their best work yet." Tshepo Mokoena of The Guardian said, "There's wit and honestly behind her observations of courting and heartbreak, making her pinhole focus on love more about nuance than navel-gazing. It's just as well the band stayed together." Ronald Grant of HipHopDX said, "Ego Death is an album both suited specifically for the social media age of music listeners but simultaneously rich and permeated with the traditions of the soul and R&B music of the past."

Jon Caramanica of The New York Times said, "There's convincing thump at work here, but not so much as to overwhelm the lustrous keyboards, the nuzzling bass, the way several of the songs unfurl like blooming roses." Sean Fennell of PopMatters said, "Ego Death and The Internet require a little bit of patience, but if you are willing to give it a full go, it will reward you with one of the most interesting albums in recent memory." Patrick Taylor of RapReviews said, "Ego Death is the perfect summer record. Breezy, smooth, lazy, and meant for warm nights." Craig Jenkins of Pitchfork said, "The Internet's songs have always felt like scenes of salaciousness happening just out of earshot. Ego Death finally pulls us into the maelstrom." Suzy Exposito of Rolling Stone said, "The best tracks fade away into gravity-defying instrumental outros that make Syd's heartache feel sublimely serene."

Trivia

  1. Steve Lacy produced a Grammy nominated album before graduating high school.

Discussion Questions

  1. How does this rank in the Internet catalog?
  2. Best songs? Worst songs?
