Throwback Write-Up #8: MF DOOM - MM...FOOD

Posted: 12 May 2020 08:00 AM PDT

Artist: MF DOOM

Album: MM...FOOD

Introduction

MM...FOOD is Daniel Dumile's 5th studio album, but only the 2nd album released under the MF DOOM name. The album title itself is an anagram for MF DOOM. At 15 tracks and 48 minutes long, MM...FOOD stands as one of DOOM's most critically acclaimed releases, but is often overshadowed by its counterpart, Madvillainy. The album is themed around food, with the title, cover, song titles, lyrics, and samples all based around food or food metaphors. The project's cover presents DOOM eating, with his son under the table also wearing a mask. DOOM's son was known to actually wear his father's masks, as revealed by tweets from MF GRIMM during a small dispute. The album was released on November 16th, 2004 under the Rhymesayers Entertainment label. For the sake of length and formatting, I will not be writing sections about DOOM's origins, past, or career before 2004, and instead get right into the thick of things.

2004

2004 was DOOM's creative peak, the only time where he would ever release 3 projects in the same year. This is not a new concept in hip-hop, as many artists have taken advantage of their peak, whether in popularity or creativity. DaBaby did this exact thing last year with Baby on Baby and KIRK. DMX did it in 1998 with Flesh of my Flesh, Blood of my Blood and It's Dark and Hell is Hot. DOOM did it with Madvillainy in March 2004, followed up with Venomous Villain under the Viktor Vaughn alias, and finished with MM...FOOD in November. We witness DOOM in 3 completely different creative pockets here. Madvillainy was a triumph, a moment in hip-hop that showed everyone what a one rapper one producer album should sound like. On that album, DOOM is slow, cold and calculated. The production is vivid, menacing at times, but retains the balance of DOOM's sharp-witted rhymes and supervillain inspired persona. MM...FOOD contrasts its legendary predecessor in many ways. Its much more lighthearted, more colorful, and loose. A more fair comparison would be MF DOOM's first album, Operation: Doomsday. The album presents a much more "fun" tone, and makes an easier first listen. The album also sports plenty of silly skits, often using food-related banter or the usual Doctor Doom samples you can find on almost any DOOM album.

Track by Track

  1. Beef Rap - Containing 9 samples, including the 1982 Spider-Man Canon of Doom, Beef Rap serves as the exciting intro to the album, with a slow but steady buildup using food-based samples. One small skit in the intro directly references Operation: Doomsday. DOOM comes in after 1:48 of samples have already played, and the food lyrics come out immediately. The song title and subject is about rap beef, and what happens when you get into beefs with rappers you should not bother with in the first place. DOOM uses food metaphors to describe rap beef, at one point comparing rap beef to eating fried food, and how it can kill you.
  2. Hoe Cakes - The second song on MM...FOOD is about women, pimping them out and showing them off. The song's title is a double entendre. Hoe cakes are a flatbread thin cake, which were made in a flat iron pan called a hoe. The other meaning I am sure you can understand for yourself. Using 4 samples, the song's opening verse takes strong inspiration from 1988's EMPD by Jane.
  3. Potholderz (ft. Count Bass D) - The first song on the album with a feature, Count Bass D brings impressive verses and a fantastic, very unique beat. The song has 4 samples, including Still D.R.E. and Aint No Half Steppin by Big Daddy Kane. The food metaphors continue, with lines such as "MC's is crabs in a barrel, pass the Old Bay." The song is about old school rappers, ones who are past their primes and are no longer competition to rappers like DOOM.
  4. One Beer - Produced by Madlib, One Beer contains one of the best beats on the album. It was originally planned for Madvillainy under the name One Beer (Drunk Version), but was scrapped from that project and landed here. The song's intro is DOOM's own spin on Cole Porter's I Get a Kick Out of You. The song's music video was released in 2018 for the album's 14th anniversary.
  5. Deep Fried Frenz - produced by DOOM himself, the song is about friendship and all the ups and downs that come alongside it. The beat is featured on DOOM's Special Herbs Vol. 1 and 2. It has 2 samples, including Friends by Whodini.
  6. Poo-Putt Platter - Track 6 on the album is the beginning of a 4 part sound collage series of various food-related samples and catchy beats. The track samples Fat Albert's Halloween special. HipHopHeads would also recognize this DOOM beat on Joey Bada$$'s song World Domination, from his debut mixtape 1999.
  7. Fillet-O-Rapper - the second part of the 4 part sound collage series. The album continues on with yet more uncharacteristic but entertaining production. The samples continue to fuel the food theme with lines such as "I got a really stressful day and I really really needed some food. Something healthy like beets." (You get it)
  8. Gumbo - the 3rd of the 4 part series, Gumbo starts on the same sample Fillet-O-Rapper ended on, beginning with the word Gumbo. It makes for a clever and smooth transition. Gumbo is a fun skit that makes wordplay on the idea of consumable raps, from a documentary of edible wraps.
  9. Fig Leaf Bi-Carbonate - containing a Sesame Street sample, this is the final part of the 4 part sound collage series in the middle of the album. The skit themes itself around the idea of poison, and the safety of eating.
  10. Kon Karne - translated in Spanish to literally mean "with meat," Kon Karne is the most touching song on the album. It serves as a tribute to DOOM's late brother DJ Subroc, who was killed in a car crash in 1993. Produced by DOOM himself, he utilizes the vocal sample to sound like lasers shooting over a calmly sped up piano, making for an odd but interesting sound clash.
  11. Guinesses (ft. Angelika and 4ize) - A common idea on many of DOOM's earlier releases is having one track in the later halves of his albums to be soley rapped or sung by a female artist. Guinesses is that song, the Metalface is nowhere to be heard on this track. Female rapper Angelika takes the spotlight on a verse centered around drinking away your sorrows due to an ended relationship.
  12. Kon Queso - Kon Queso continues the food metaphors by referencing both cheese as food and money. The song was originally released as a single for vinyl under the name Yee Haw, but was rerecorded for the project. In an interview with XXL Magazine, DOOM was quoted for saying this about Kon Queso: "It had to be two things: It had to be a food people could relate to and there had to be another play on the word. For instance, I'd say con queso, like cheese. Everyone knows "cheese" has a reference in the street, as money and whatnot. And cheese is something that's always added in addition to a cheeseburger or a beef patty. So it's about finding a word where you can take two different approaches to it."
  13. Rapp Snitches Knishes (ft. Mr. Fantastik) - Referenced by HHH to death during the 6ix9ine trials, Rapp Snitches Knishes is about snitches in hip hop, specifically rappers that snitch on themselves by bragging about their crimes on songs. Possibly the best hook on the album, the show is stolen by a mysterious MC named Mr. Fantastik, who no one is entirely sure who he is to this day. Mr. Fantastik has remained an interesting discussion point among DOOM fans as to who he is/was and why we never heard from him again.
  14. Vomitspit - originally titled Vomit, the 14th song on MM...FOOD is about medication, specifically pills. The song is one of DOOM's slickest, full of amazing lyrics and incredible rhyme schemes. The song has a Cuthead remix from 2014.
  15. Kookies - the closer of MM...FOOD, DOOM references many different types of cookies, including wafers, Oreos, and Girl Scout Cookies. The song has close ties to the Langston Hughes poem titled Harlem Sweeties, which similarly talks about sweets, comparing them to women. DOOM also references edibles in cookies. The song's lyrics also talk about DOOM being caught masturbating to internet porn found on his computer, which makes for a very strange but hilarious album conclusion.

Leftovers

After MM...FOOD was released, DOOM was not finished, and released a bonus disc titled MM...Leftovers:format(jpeg):mode_rgb():quality(90)/discogs-images/R-375551-1536477634-3274.png.jpg). The disc contained 10 tracks consisting of remixes from the original album and throwaways that never made the cut. Other songs such as Vomitspit would have their originally recorded versions on this compilation as well. The original version of this bonus disc is quite rare and not commonly seen anymore, even by avid DOOM collectors.

Conclusion

MM...Food is a classic, and one of DOOM's best projects in his discography. The album is pure fun, while also being capable of discussing more serious topics. The idea of a food themed album is one many rappers would have not approached, and fits perfectly in the weirdly creative mind we all know DOOM possesses. MM...Food can be credited as an interesting and unique project in the DOOM catalog from the man's peak as a rapper. This is the DOOM we will never hear again, one who just rapped for the sake of rapping and finding weird, kooky ways to add a personal twist to it that no other rapper would try. On paper, a food album doesn't seem the most appealing, and might come off as a more plain topic in a genre full of complicated, deep messaging. But that's the best thing about DOOM, the supervillain can make anything work.

What do you think of this album?

Favorite song?

Favorite beat?

[SHOTS FIRED] Dyme-a-Duzin talks about Pro Era, Joey and STEEZ's relationship before he died, and explains who his last verse was about on IG live

Posted: 12 May 2020 01:04 PM PDT

YouTube video

They're seemingly backing some supsicions that STEEZ was not fucking with Joey towards the end, and was being blackballed so Joey could be the spotlight of Pro Era. Also that his last verse throwing shots at someone was aimed at Joey.

Here's the song: SMTH - Last Straw (ft. Capital STEEZ)

Some lyrics:

How you not going to give me mine, every time I rip a line

I haven't seen the limelight, in a right mind

Rappers base their careers off of white lies

A ghost writer been why he so nice

I order these celebrities who are pouring cries

And probably get their lines from a starter kit to get the bars to spit

I been here to provide them facts

But you like sing-a-longs and campfire raps

The difference between you and I is that

I can rap and I don't brag about designer bags

Besides the fact that these guys are whack

It took me 15 minutes just to write this track

Tell me how you liking that, bitch

Brings me back to the Pro Era freestyle on Pitchfork Selector way back when they first came out, like summer of 2012. Joey said "I steal all of STEEZ's lines." And some other joking mention about Powers and STEEZ writing peoples' verses.

Edit: forgot too that a few years ago STEEZ's sister Tamara was pissed at Joey and PE surrounding STEEZ and the release of King Capital and who the money should go to. She threatened to cancel STEEZ Day over it. Had to be something serious.

Description

Demon Days is the second studio album by English virtual band Gorillaz. It was first released on 11 May 2005 by Virgin Records. Produced by the band, Danger Mouse, Jason Cox, and James Dring, the album features contributions from De La Soul, Neneh Cherry, Martina Topley-Bird, Roots Manuva, MF DOOM, Ike Turner, Bootie Brown of the Pharcyde, Shaun Ryder, and Dennis Hopper. As with the band's eponymous 2001 debut, the release of Demon Days and its respective live performances were both accompanied by various multimedia, including interactive features on the Gorillaz website, a total of four animated music videos, and animatics for select videos. Almost all visuals associated with the album were designed by Gorillaz co-creator Jamie Hewlett, under his design company Zombie Flesh Eaters.

Upon its release, Demon Days peaked at number one on the UK Albums Chart and number 6 on the US Billboard 200, and was later certified six times platinum in the UK and double platinum in the US. Outperforming their debut, the album has sold eight million copies worldwide, and spawned the singles "Feel Good Inc.", "Dare", "Dirty Harry", "Kids with Guns", and "El Mañana". Spin ranked Demon Days as the fourth-best album of 2005, while Mojo ranked it at number eighteen on their year-end list and hailed the album as a "genre-busting, contemporary pop milestone". The NME placed the album at number 98 on their list of 100 greatest albums of the decade, and Uncut placed it at number 75 on their list of top 150 albums of the decade. Complex included it on their list of 100 Best Albums of the Complex Decade, placing it at number 43, and Spin later included it in their list of "The 300 Best Albums of 1985–2014".
