Album Background

Austin Richard Post born 1995, has first gained attention from his hit single White Iverson. A chubby, weird and goofy looking guy soon gained acclaim for his extended mix of music, and later became one of the best-selling, most streamed and most popular artists in the world. Wikipedia states that "Post makes music in various genres, such as hip hop, pop, trap, pop-rap, rock, R&B and cloud rap. Post's music has been described as a "melting pot of the country, grunge, hip-hop and R&B" and Post himself has been described as versatile. Such a huge mesh of genres makes Post Malone accessible to a wide audience of people all over the world. Post Malone has 4 No.1 Hits, 9 Top 10 Hits and 45 songs in total entering the Billboard 100 list.


Album Highlights

Hollywoods Bleeding

Quite a slow, mellow and deep intro which promises a lot. The beat switch is quite nice. Post Malone mixes rap with his melodies very well on this one. This track is actually what I expected the album to be at this point. Drake can mesh R&B and Hip Hop so well that it can be considered his own genre, but can Post mesh his melodies and various other genres with Hip-Hop to make it his own? Since his album Stoney dropped Post Malone kept turning away from hip-hop scene, the same genre that got him big in the first place yet still maintaining a strong footing in the genre.

Saint-Tropez

Saint-Tropez is one of my highlights on this album. A very melodic (probably gonna use this description for a lot of songs) and braggadocios song. Cringy/Corny/Funny (whatever you call it depends on your opinion about Post Malone) lines like:

Abs like Abercrombie Fitch, Bud light runnin' trough my piss

It doesn't take to go deep in the album to know that Post Malone can make the dumbest lines sound flashy and fun to listen to. His whole goofy-rockstar style is what works out so well for him, and there's really not that many artists like him out there at the moment. He's not a rapper, he's not a pop artist, and he's definitely not a true rock-star, so who is he?

Enemies feat. Da Baby.

Once again, Posts melodic sense is amazing, 3rd song in a row so far and he hits us with very radio friendly pop-rap song, that did quite well. DaBaby continues his highlight feature year with yet another hit. Both of these artists follow a formula, that works very well and as a result we the succesful songs sound more or less the sam

Allergic

This song demonstrates Post Malones true pop side. This song is a showcase of the different voices post Malone can pull off from red-faced yelling to smoky crooning to in between the two. It's a golden construction for a pop song, that just works for so many different fans.

Circles

This song is one of my most favorite songs off the album. The guitar riffs, the beat, the 808s and the clap fit PERRRFECTLY with Post Malones voices and hum's. When the single released this is what I expected to hear from the album, a few more deeper and experimental songs, that are a mesh of few different genre's. I'd say if I had to pick my favorite pure pop song from Post Malone it would be this one. Everything about it is just so catchy. The lyrics on this one are quite good as far as Post Malones lyricism goes.

Take What You Want feat Travis Scott, Ozzy Osbourne.

Finally we approached the most unusual, unexpected and somewhat different song from the whole album. Three completely different artists from different genres that work so well together. Travis Scott is spectacular on this one, and Ozzy just simply does not age. Post Malone holds his own taking over the hook, and show's that despite my criticism about him being a wanna-be rockstar, this image is something he, at this point can pull of the easiest.

I'm Gonna Be

This song is some melancholic pop-trap music that I would like to hear Post do more. I mean once again, there's nothing much to say about it except the fact that it's executed perfectly. By now I hope you realized how almost useless this track-by-track review is since it's not such a musically deep album. Every song on this album can be a hit. Sunflower feat. Swae Lee. Even though I would consider this a Swae Lee song, which is from the Spider – Man: Into The Spiderverse soundtrack, it still ended up on Post's album, because that's just how music and sales work these days. This is by far the most catchiest and beautiful song Post Malone has ever made. It is so fucking catchy I don't even know what else I can say about it, except that literally anyone in the world can vibe to this shit.

Goodbyes feat. Young Thug.

This is a second near-perfect song by Post Malone and Young Thug. These two just make an extremely catchy hit, and I haven't stopped listening to this song ever it released. I feel that this song demonstrates the true pop value and versatility of Young Thug as well as Post Malone's ability to adapt to almost any rapper out there. These two make a good duo and im hoping to here some more experimental melodic shit in the future.


Conclusion

Post's music comes from that zone of confusion where hip-hop and alternative rock overlap. This spot, widens every year, but it's hard to imagine the vortex producing someone as vibrant and dominant as Post Malone. Depending on how hard you squint, his music can sound anywhere from Stone Temple Pilots or Everlast or Rae Sremmurd or even Tame Impala. The team behind this sound ball of the last 25 years of rap and rock radio—consists of Louis Bell, Frank Dukes, and Post. Together, they made most of the brightest and most memorable tracks on last year's Beerbongs & Bentleys, and having established their winning formula, they work it relentlessly on Hollywood. Post Malone can make any song and any corny lyric sound cool or melodic. He can make surface level song sound deep with the right production and just-the right tone of his voice. This is a gift that not a lot of artist have. It may seem that this review is a bash on Post Malone, but what my true point is that a guy with his talent should be making music that is much more interesting than what he is making right now. Beerbongs & Bentleys was a successful record, and it had interesting deep cuts that are much better than Hollywood's deep cuts, such as 92 Explorer, Zack and Codeine and Sugar Wraith. Post Malone is left in a place where he has to produce hits, because that's what his label wants, and so far he has been a great investment. But this style, will soon get boring, with the next big pop-rap star coming in the game (whoever that might be).

Overall, Hollywood's Bleeding is Post Malones successful attempt to secure his radio spot for another year or two. Every song here is just extremely polished for the radio. The mix between alt-rock, hip hop and pop turns out to be a quite good formula for people who can pull it off, but not everyone can do it as well as Post Malone. Post Malones corny, lazy, and sometimes just plain stupid lyrics are what is fun about him. His spot in the music right now is just that radio guy who's can pull off any hook or feature as well as anyone else (rivaled by Drake, but atleast Drake can makes songs interesting by putting some of Drake's own style). Depending on how you look at it, I wouldn't consider Post Malone's style and formula unique. It is just a mix of everything that works. And it works wonders. Malone sounds great on everything, from Tiesto remixes to holding up his own with some of the most popular rappers out there. This album does not invent a new style, it does not produce something extremely new and interesting. As far as albums go I would put it barely in front of Stony, just because how well polished it is. There is so much filler, but as far as filler's go, even these are hits.

I'd give a 7,5/10 a very safe score, for a very safe album from a very safe artist.

Background: Johnathan Kirk, born in 1991, never had initial intentions to become a musician. Growing up in Charlotte, North Carolina for much of his childhood, Kirk lived a life of minor crime until his early 20s when he made the decision to become a rapper. In 2015, Kirk officially adopted the stage name Baby Jesus, and his career was off and running with a series of mixtapes known as the Baby Talk mixtapes. Kirk introduced an aggressive sound with a playful attitude, as well as a humorous infant aesthetic that he utilized for notoriety, including wearing nothing but a diaper at South by Southwest music festival in 2017. After 2 years, he switched his stage name to DaBaby full time, just as he was gaining a bit of traction within the industry. In 2018, the stars were beginning to align for DaBaby; his mixtape Blank Blank saw the most success of any of his released projects, while the track "Walker Texas Ranger" was gaining some virility of its own, particularly due its humorous Wild West setting. This slow ascension to the top of the industry was not met without controversy, however. DaBaby, despite his newfound fame, saw himself splattered in several headlines over legal troubles. Most notably, he was involved in a Walmart shooting in 2018, where he shot and fatally injured a man who was attempting to rob the rapper in front of his family. Despite these outside distractions, his rise to the top was not halted, and he finally released his first label-sanctioned album, Baby on Baby, in March.

Review: At the immediate beginning of the album, DaBaby sets the tone of the record with the flagrant intro track "Taking It Out". This song, while under 2 minutes, offers a really good sampler into the sound of this album as a whole. DaBaby, who often begins to rip his speedy triplet flows before the beat even kicks in, wastes no time or energy with his delivery. Utilizing that deep, distinctive voice of his, DaBaby's flow stands out for its pseudo-melodic nature and brash charisma. His bars are always gliding across the production behind it while still maintaining that aggressiveness and bold attitude that characterizes a lot of his music.

The production featured throughout this album is characterized by a simplistic formula that was clearly tailored to accommodate DaBaby's delivery, which typically keeps the pace of the tracks at the forefront. In particular, producer JetsonMade found his beats peppered throughout the album, noted by the raw, pounding kick drums and 808 patterns that disrupt the very simple melodic elements also presented. Take "Suge", which has since grown into DaBaby's biggest song: the muted, sneaky piano melody is overtaken by the stabbing barrage of 808s that the track is now recognized for. This does not mean that DaBaby eliminated the more commercial elements of his earlier music. Several tracks on the record, such as "Best Friend", return to the melodic roots with DaBaby singing a hook over a pitter-patter synth melody. Tracks like "Pony" also incorporate the signature trap flute that has become a mainstay in the genre lately. All of these sounds are distinctive but very accessible, rendering DaBaby's eventual rise to rap stardom as unsurprising. However, as nice as the production is, none of this success could have been met without DaBaby's rapping itself.

DaBaby uses the triplet flow a LOT. It's present on pretty much every single song on Baby on Baby in some capacity. Using this already common flow at such a high level may be perceived as redundant, but DaBaby makes it work with his command of the beat, as he adjusts his tempo, line breaks and inflections to ride that melody to its fullest. It's a relatively simple formula, but a very addicting one.

DaBaby's lyrics aren't necessarily revolutionary or different from any other trap artist out there. The same themes of drugs, guns, girls and crime are found in almost every single song. Due to this obvious lack of substance, DaBaby had to make up for it with a bold presence on the microphone, and did he deliver. DaBaby is inherently charismatic, and his confident personality bleeds into his rapping constantly. It's obvious that DaBaby doesn't take himself, his career or his music too seriously, and that attitude is presented on tracks like "Baby Sitter" with the songs unorthodox lyrical situation of having sex with the baby sitter, as well as the occasional goofy bar that acts to alleviate the violent subject matter. The result is a collection of catchy bangers with a humorous, likable twist, and it'd be difficult for many fans of modern trap to resist that combination.

All in all, Baby on Baby was exactly the project that DaBaby needed to reach the pinnacle of the industry. In an age where trap music is evolving into a polished piece of the mainstream, this record reintroduces that individuality and personality that I find a lot of trap to be lacking. This is not to say that DaBaby is super different from the rest of the pack, as he still follows a lot of the same tropes and trends of modern hip-hop, but he stands out beyond the rest as the resident class clown of the genre; a class clown who can kick a mean freestyle.

Street's Disciple is the seventh studio album by American rapper Nas, released as a double album on November 30, 2004 by Columbia Records. Named after one of his lyrics from "Live at the Barbeque" by Main Source, the album's cover art was digitally created using photos of Nas to create an adaptation of The Last Supper.

Street's Disciple was well-received by critics and debuted at number 5 on the US Billboard 200, selling over 232,000 copies in its first week of sales. It was Nas's seventh consecutive platinum record in the United States, having shipped over 1 million copies.

Most of the album's production was handled between Salaam Remi, L.E.S. and Chucky Thompson of Sean Combs' production team The Hitmen. Remi contributed production on eleven tracks, L.E.S. produced on eight and Chucky Thompson helped on six. Salaam Remi (who collaborated with Nas on his previous LPs Stillmatic and God's Son) led all with nine solo productions. L.E.S. only produced three solo outings, but one included the single "Just a Moment". Thompson, on the other hand, had one solo production credit ("Getting Married").

Other notable producers from the album include A Tribe Called Quest member Q-Tip (who had last worked with Nas on Illmatic's "One Love" and the remix of "The World Is Yours") and D.I.T.C. producer Buckwild ("These Are Our Heroes"). Nas himself produced "Suicide Bounce" and "U.B.R. (Unauthorized Biography of Rakim)", both from the second disc. L.E.S. also brought on baggage for his productions. T. Black and Nut assisted the legendary producer on "The Makings of a Perfect Bitch" and Herb Middleton helped with the beat on "Me &You (Dedicated to Destiny)". Chucky Thompson, too, brought in extra help for "Live Now" (Barnardo "Nardo" Williams). Rapper Ill Bill made a song similar to "U.B.R. (Unauthorized Biography Of Rakim)" titled "U.B.S. (Unauthorized Biography Of Slayer)" on his album The Hour of Reprisal (2008).

Nas' father Olu Dara is featured on the title track "Street's Disciple" and lead single "Bridging the Gap". Aside from Ludacris ("Virgo") and Quan ("Just a Moment") no other MC's actually deliver a verse on Street's Disciple. Busta Rhymes plays hypeman to "Suicide Bounce" and Doug E. Fresh beatboxes on "Virgo". Kelis (Nas' ex-wife) helps sing the chorus along with the bridge on "American Way". The album does feature many singers though, including: Amerie ("Rest of My Life"), Emily ("Reason"), Maxwell ("No One Else in the Room") and Keon Bryce ("War"). Nas also uses a voice synthesizer to make his voice high-pitched for his female alter-ego Scarlett, who appears on "Sekou Story" and "Live Now".

Street's Disciple features multiple socio-conscious and political songs, such as "A Message to the Feds, Sincerely, We the People", "American Way" and "These Are Our Heroes". The latter (originally titled "Coon's Picnic") contained attacks directed toward multiple black celebrities including: O.J. Simpson and NBA superstar Kobe Bryant. Another topic addressed by Nas were important women in his life or females in general. "Getting Married" is dedicated to his then-newlywed wife Kelis Rogers-Jones, "Me & You (Dedicated to Destiny)" is, aptly titled, directed toward Nas' daughter and "Makings of a Perfect Bitch" describes most men's idea of the ideal woman. Death and appreciating life are the subject to several songs as well such as "Live Now", "Rest of My Life" and "Just a Moment".
