Ask that question in this thread.

[DISCUSSION] J.I.D DiCaprio 2 (1 Year Later)

Posted: 25 Nov 2019 09:00 PM PST

Happy Birthday to the East Atlanta Playboy's J.I.D's sophomore album, DiCaprio 2! This project had tremendous amounts of Dreamville hype surrounding it as not only would it be the follow up to his debut fan loved project The Never Story, but also this project would be following hot after JID's famous show stopping XXL performance. The expectations were at an all time high, yet somehow he still managed to blow them through the roof with technical rapping that weaves and maneuvers through tales and thoughts of competition, criticism, gang violence, and drug abuse. DiCaprio 2 immediately had it's fair share of minor controversy before arrival as it would be delayed due to sampling issues. However even upon arrival the cover art would be changed because the model on the original was not DiCaprio himself but a lookalike who never approved of the photo usage, therefore scrapping what a lot of fans still consider to be the better cover art. Nonetheless this project brought J.I.D to the forefront of Dreamville and the East Atlanta King may soon be looking to take bigger titles even in his own camp as seen by his massive representation on the compilation project Revenge of the Dreamers III. The last piece of info to share is that this was a performance project first before it was ever considered a conceptual one.

The digital event is set to include four hours of live streamed radio sets – a 'digital take on the genre's pirate radio roots', on Friday November 29.

The line-up includes Sharky Major, Durrty Goodz, Manga Saint Hilare, Lioness, Saskilla, Jamakabi, Nasty Jack, Bruza, Scrufizzer, Ten Dixon, Drifter, Lady Shocker and Taliifah, with 'special guests' still to be announced.

From The Mirror (I know I'm sorry):

In collaboration with Grime Originals, the 2019 Grime 4 Corbyn event is promising 'special guests and a showcasing of the genre's ongoing support for justice, equality and prosperity for all'.

The group, which has tweeted that it is endorsing the Labour leader at the election, says on its website that it wants young people to 'take part in the electoral process [but] vote for who you want.'

Sharky Major, the founder of Grime Originals and co-founding member of the collective N.A.S.T.Y crew, said: 'My parents and grandparents have always been in favour of Labour and I'm no different. We are regular hard working people who want the best for people like us.'

Logan Sama, a key DJ in the scene, added: 'I am not sure any politician can deliver what they promise, but I know that the Conservatives have delivered years of austerity and cuts that have massively affected the working class whilst the mega rich continue to get acquire obscene personal wealth and corporations continue to take their earnings offshore and not pay back in to our tax system.

'I'm ready for change. For the good of the many.'

Some artists who have endorsed Corbyn:

this comes on the heels of criticism of the original movement as exploitative

[DISCUSSION] At concerts in your city, what are some local crowd-pleasers played by DJs that more people should know about?

Posted: 24 Nov 2019 04:46 PM PST

Last night, at Freddie Gibbs' show in Charlotte, his DJ (Ralph) had to occupy some time while Freddie finished his blunt backstage. Naturally, he selected some songs that would appeal to the local crowd. The QC's new king DaBaby got younger attendees like myself full of energy, as anybody might expect, with both "BOP" and "Suge" being played. More surprising was Petey Pablo's "Raise Up", where the anthemic Carolina chorus had the Gen X'ers in the crowd helicoptering their shirts around their heads. Outside of the Carolinas, most people have probably forgotten about this song -- it came out before I was born, but I still knew it from being a native. Last year, Denzel Curry brought out our own Deniro Farrar for an even more locally-obscure track in "#NewCharlotte". All this had me wondering: when something similar happens in other cities, what would a DJ go for?

In big cities like New York, what aspect of y'alls musical history gets sourced to pass time? In Detroit or LA, does playing local stars like Sada Baby or Drakeo show that the DJ knows his stuff, or do they go for wider appeal with Em and Kendrick? A few nights prior, Freddie was in Des Moines, which I imagine doesn't have a thriving rap scene; what are the options there? And in foreign countries -- Freddie was in Denmark earlier this week -- do you hear local rappers as well?

[DISCUSSION] Nas - Nastradamus (20 Years later)

Posted: 24 Nov 2019 08:05 AM PST

20 years ago Nas released Nastradamus, his follow up to I am.

This was one of the first albums ever leaked to the internet, and Nas had to completely change his double disc plan.

How do you rate this among his discography, favorite songs, opinion on the record, etc. Discuss.
