Have a question that you need answered? Was it not answered last week? Did not get a satisfying answer? Or a question that you feel is too small to make a new thread for? Maybe something you think everyone but you knows?

Ask that question in this thread.

Questions must be on topic, concise, and answerable. Answers must be a real answer that solves the question. Do not ask a question that can be covered in the resources section.

[DISCUSSION] Eminem - Encore (15 Years Later

Posted: 11 Nov 2019 07:58 PM PST

On November 12th, 2004 Eminem released his fourth album Encore.

This fourth album by Eminem proves to be just as different from the first few as they are from each other. He began his career as a fiction writer-- creating characters and stories to write songs about. His lyrics were fun and catchy with some depth to them. His next two albums, Marshall Mathers LP and The Eminem Show took his work to the next level: songs became more personal and more angry.

Now on his fourth album, Encore, the songs are still personal, but the anger is slowly fading from his voice. Songs like "Crazy In Love" (and even "Puke", if you can get past the vomiting sound effects) and "Mockingbird" prove that Em has reflected on his life and the lessons he took away from his childhood and can find what's really important. "Yellow Brick Road" is his autobiography, and "Like Toy Soldiers" reflects on his recent feuds with other rap stars. Lyrically, all of his songs on this album are strong, but the ones listed above (aside from "Mosh") are, in my opinion, the best. The anger from his voice in The Eminem Show seems to have dissipated; Eminem still lets his strong opinions be heard on Encore, but they sound more mature, a true test of his evolution as a songwriter, producer, and rap artist. (He even thanks his mother for "the way she raised him because it made him who he is today" on one song).

What are your thoughts on this album?

How does it hold up 15 years later?

How does it compare to his other albums?

[DISCUSSION] Big K.R.I.T. - Cadillactica (5 Years Later)

Posted: 10 Nov 2019 08:36 AM PST

On November 10th, 2014 Big K.R.I.T. released sophomore album Cadillactica.

This would mark his 12th official body of work since his drastically overlooked career began in 2005, with an appearance on the cover of the 2011 XXL Freshman Class, ten ingeniously produced and lyrical mixtapes and two major label albums under Def Jam Records.

The album came shortly after releasing his mixtape See Me On Top – Vol. 4 and the leaking of the entire album on NPR.org of all places.

In its first week, Cadillactica sold nearly 44,000 copies, beating his previous album Live From the Underground sales by 1,000 units.

Cadillactica made the list of top 50 albums of 2014 by Complex cracking in at number 23 scoring higher than both Sam Smith and ScHoolboy Q.

After releasing this album he sold out his national tour with 20,000 tickets sold.

This album is set on the planet of Cadillactica, KRITs creation of what sounds like a love planet with southern culture. From the start we have talk of intimate relationships, religion and cadillacs. There's a little bit of everything on this, from bass bangers and strip club joints to deep love and spirituality.

It's never usually a question when it comes to KRITs lyrical arsenal. He continues his hot streak on the mic with this album. His flows vary in tempo and emotion. He delivers every word with purpose, conviction and clarity. His singing is so bluesy throughout and completely genuine. The hooks although at times a tad cheesy are actually well constructed, a rare skill in music period. Plus when talking about love who doesnt sound cheesy?

KRIT produced about half of this and handed the rest over to other producers. Being a fan of soul and jazz, I absolutely love the production on this album. Its a little different for KRIT but he maintains his identity and southern culture. There are saxaphones, horns, pianos and guitars laced throughout. The basslines remain classically southern. The drums bang dirty south still and the production is varied to provide bangers, slow jamz and some of the purest southern soul rap you'll hear for a while. Everybody delivered on this front.

This album is a consistent tour of KRITs planet and everything in it. There is a little something on here for most ears. The jazz and soul focus on this project really worked for me. Blues, jazz and southern rap can really go well together and this album is proof of that. All the features deserved their spot. Each producer he selected also hit the mark whilst managing to create a diverse yet cohesive soundscape for KRIT to wild out over. One of the most consistent artists of the last decade...4eva underrated.

What are your thoughts on this album?

How does it hold up 5 years later?

How does it compare to his other albums?

Favorite tracks?

[FIRST IMPRESSIONS] Wiki - OOFIE

Posted: 09 Nov 2019 05:09 AM PST

It's been a little more than 24 hours since Wiki dropped his sophomore album and his first independently.

What did everyone think of it? Personally I'm very impressed with it so far, the production is cohesive throughout and theme-wise there's clearly development from NMIM with him now reflecting more seriously on his achievements, his habits and the like. Really though no matter what he's discussing I find Wiki to be maybe the most compelling rapper out right now, his off kilter flow and distinctive delivery is hard to replicate.

I think I'll have to wait and see if I prefer it to NMIM - my first thoughts are that it seems more of a complete project but the highs of NMIM outdo OOFIE I think.
