[DISCUSSION] Joe Budden - Some Love Lost (5 Years Later)

Posted: 03 Nov 2019 07:32 PM PST

On November 4th 2014 Joe Budden released his EP Some Love Lost.

Joe Budden is a very strange character. What makes him unique is not only his candid wordplay, and clever executed punchlines but also the fact that he's possibly one of the most brutally honest amongst this generation. Rappers try to maintain an image, Joe Budden's life is a open book for the world to see. You know when he's happy, you know when he's sad, you know he's depressed and he knows how to appeal to the regular everyday person. There isn't many rappers that are willing to put their insecurities out on display for the world to listen and this is what made Budden a standout and rejuvenated his career after he got dropped from Def Jam.

No Love Lost was Joe clearly happy. Some Love Lost is Joe battling through his demons, insecurities, and showed trepidations of the cards that is thrown in his life. The EP is a very somber journey of Joe's current mental state and Joe's pain has always brought the best out of him musically as evident on the Mood Muzik series. The Vibe throughout Some Love Lost is that of somber, and dark. The album's first track The Way You Love Me is the introduction to the dark times of Joe Budden, Very candid and honest to where he claimed to have known "How Robin Williams felt" which revealed suicide thoughts and the pain his up and down relationship with Tahiry caused him.

Only Human is no question the best track on the EP. This 8 minute journey is a open book of Budden's testimonies and revelations that he's been hiding from the masses. From being more detailed with his Suicidal threats, current legal problems and drug addictions, Budden clearly takes his art as a form of escapism and this is where he excels.

The rest of the album flows through the roller coaster course of Joe Budden's depressing mental state. On Poker in the Sky He speaks on dealing with his Grandfather's battle with Cancer while he tackles how how he felt when Tahiry rejected his proposal on National Television on his Ordinary Love series with the 4th Installment titled OLS4.

Overall there isn't a bad track within this whole 6 track EP. You may listen to this project feeling that Budden is a Sycophant that brought alot of these problems on his self. But as he stated, He's Only Human and trying to find his way in the puzzle of life. Many are feeling like Joe at this stage, He just happens to put his personal battles out on display which has also made him such a remarkable MC.

What are your thoughts on this EP?

How does it hold up 5 years later?

Where does it rank with his other albums?

The legend from Dallas, Texas. This will be a follow up to his pair of EPs last year, RVLTN. This one will most likely be more civil rights rap. Bobby has been putting "#Manifest" at the end of his posts for a few months. Excited to see what's to come.

If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye (you can get more specific but that's enough imo). And then someone will respond with X, Y, and Z

You can also recommend an artist/project/scene

Example: You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats.

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

Also the more descriptive you guys are with your posts the easier it is to help you find what you want, just stating an artists name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

Look through past posts here

ALSO please check out this thread for a list of some of the most popular recommendation requests and the suggestions provided

[DISCUSSION] Vince Staples - FM! (1 Year Later)

Posted: 02 Nov 2019 07:46 AM PDT

On November 2nd, 2018 Vince Staples released his third album FM!

Just over a year on from the critical triumph that was Big Fish Theory, Vince Staples makes a surprise but welcome return with FM!, a fun concept album. While some artists side projects between main projects can fade into insignificance, in 22 brief minutes Staples still manages to make a lasting impression.

Although this project is short, Vince packs in the creativity we have come to expect from him. FM! plays out as a radio programme, with a few skits that resemble radio transitions, with the running theme being Vince urging listeners to call in to win tickets to see Kehlani live. With how short the run-time is it is impressive that Staples manages to tie the few tracks included together with a plot making the project feel more cohesive.

As far as the actual musical content the Long Beach rapper delivers, FM! contains some of his catchiest material to date. While the overall themes and sound don't stray too far from where Big Fish Theory left off, this is not a bad thing at all as we get more of the sharp production we have come to expect from Vince Staples. From opening track Feels Like Summer, Staples continues to demonstrate why he is streets ahead of his competition. One element that is perhaps improved since his last album is the hooks. On this track and throughout the album the choruses pack a punch and refuse to be forgotten.

Thematically, this is familiar territory for Vince, though again this is no weakness as his takes on gang violence are always sincere and compelling. Once again he finds the balance between humour and addressing important issues and it creates a perfect blend of a project that is a fun listen but also a more rewarding listen if you so desire.

As with Big Fish Theory, the highlight of FM! is without a doubt the production. From the sinister bass of Relay with the accompaniment of Vince's snarling delivery or the bouncing beat of FUN! that almost sounds out of place but, when paired with Vince, fits perfectly and makes for another stand out moment. With each release, Staples is becoming more and more creative and exciting and even with what could have been a throwaway project, he shows no signs of phoning it in.

For what this project is, it doesn't leave much to be desired except more of the same from Vince Staples. In fact, the only weak spots on FM! are when Vince is sidelined: Jay Rock, Kehlani and E-40 all hold their own. On the whole, Vince Staples reminds us of what he is capable of and if this is what he does in his spare time then his next output is one to be excited for.

What are your thoughts on this album?

How does it hold up 1 year later?

Where does it rank with his other albums?

[DISCUSSION] Lil Wayne - Tha Block Is Hot (20 Years Later)

Posted: 02 Nov 2019 03:54 AM PDT

Lil Wayne's solo debut album was released on November 2, 1999. Still remember catching the "new joint" on 106&Park after getting home from school. Teenage Weezy made a lot of dope songs, "Fuck Tha World" is still one of his best tracks. The lead single was recently sampled by NBA Youngboy, and "Lights Off" still goes.

By this time Wayne was a multi-platinum rapper and came up with popular terms like "Drop it like it's hot" & "bling bling", all before he was even 18 years old. Before this he didn't even curse on his records. Weezy really the kid rapper that made it.
