Recommended If You Like Thread - June 08, 2019

If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye (you can get more specific but that's enough imo). And then someone will respond with X, Y, and Z

You can also recommend an artist/project/scene

Example: You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats.

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

Also the more descriptive you guys are with your posts the easier it is to help you find what you want, just stating an artists name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

Look through past posts here

ALSO please check out this thread for a list of some of the most popular recommendation requests and the suggestions provided

[ANNOUNCEMENT] AMA with Marlon Craft @ 4pm EST Monday June 10th

Posted: 08 Jun 2019 01:04 PM PDT

Marlon Craft, a 26 year old Hell's Kitchen native MC offers an essential mix of new school oxygen and golden era Hip Hop. He made waves in NY's underground scene showcasing his advanced wordplay and technicality through bar heavy freestyles. Rare in his city's age group is a "woke" master of ceremony who awakens listeners with punch lines capable of torching Sway In The Morning cyphers. In 2019, Marlon released his first single from the album, Shallow featuring Dizzy Wright followed by the controversial track about institutional racism in America, Gang Shit. Marlon's debut studio album, Funhouse Mirror is due out on June 18, 2019.

If a rapper wants to quit making music we should all give our utmost respect and support for that decision

Posted: 08 Jun 2019 11:05 AM PDT

I just read the news article about NLE Choppa and that's what has inspired this post. This type of thing happened with X and also with lil uzi and Diablo not too long ago. If you say they make these long dramatic Instagram posts for attention, you are correct, but you are probably correct for the wrong reasons. These posts look like desperate cries for help. I don't think they do this to get people to give them a lot of attention to make them feel better.

I think they do it in hope that someone will do something to help them out of the trap they got themselves into. The trap I am talking about is how the industry controls these artists and takes advantage of the fact that theres no other good way for them to make money besides rapping due to their insane publicity. And I also don't think it's always the artist who chooses to delete these posts either. I think it's their management trying to cover up the fact that a lot of artists are unhappy with what they're doing.

It seems like a lot of these rappers bust their asses off to get famous, but once they get famous they start to feel regretful very quickly. From what I've seen, being a celebrity can either be a mind blowing, magical journey, just a good life in general, or just a stressful shit hole. If the world wasn't so fake then we would know how it really can be for these celebrities and we'd be able to help them but I don't see our world getting any less fake anytime soon.

All this shit is hidden to the public eye because they practice looking good on camera even if they're faking it. Even if you disagree you have to show your support because everyone's mind is different and some people just deteriorate mentally under that amount of pressure.

A lot of these artists also lose passion in their music once they get famous. It's because they replaced all the excitement in their lives with the thrill of coming up as an artist and once they get famous they forget how to enjoy life normally again. Or they dig themselves deeper into the hole they've created by using their wealth to find excitement in life.

Its the same thing as when they say a drug addict is chasing the dragon. I think once these rappers finish coming up and establish themselves in the rap game they can't find purpose and meaning in anything because their music was motivated purely by their desire for fame because there was something in them that told them they had a chance.

So once they're famous they're left asking themselves, "What the fuck do I do now?" They never thought about what they'd do for the rest of their lives they only focused on blowing up. And I guarantee the industry and fans are going to convince NLE Choppa to take what he said back and start rapping again.

People will most likely convince Diablo to start making beats again. And look how fast they convinced Uzi. Chances are that barely anyone will read or appreciate this post but I just want to say that we need to come together and somehow show these rappers that it's okay to quit or take a break and show them that we understand. This bullshit in the music industry has been going on forever and it needs to fucking end.

Something needs to be done to stop so many artists from signing to labels and instead just go independent. And mental health should be the number one priority for musicians, not their music. I know this is cheesy but if you feel like it, spread the hashtag #goindependentandenddepression. I just want to do anything I can possibly do to help fix this shit because I know how painful it is to lose purpose and meaning in your life. And if you haven't experienced anything like that just know that it's one of the most horrible feelings you can feel and no amount of money or fame makes sacrificing your happiness worth it.

Tl;DR: More and more artists are desperately crying for help through social media. The labels and industries are destroying their mental health by taking advantage of the fact that making music is the only thing they can do to make money. If an artist doesn't want to make music anymore, support that because having that life can be complete hell. We need to use the power of the internet to encourage artists to go independent and prioritize their mental health over their music. #goindependentandenddepression

[DISCUSSION] Jorja Smith - Lost & Found (One Year Later)

Posted: 08 Jun 2019 11:54 AM PDT

One year ago today, Jorja Smith released her debut album "Lost & Found." Featuring standout singles "Blue Lights," "Teenage Fantasy" and "Where Did I Go?", the project revolves around Jorja's struggles with love and personal identity, and on a greater scale the concept of quite literally being "Lost and Found" by yourself.

——————

Tracklist

  1. Lost & Found

  2. Teenage Fantasy

  3. Where Did I Go?

  4. February 3rd

  5. On Your Own

  6. The One

  7. Wandering Romance

  8. Blue Lights

  9. Lifeboats (Freestyle)

  10. Goodbyes

  11. Tomorrow

  12. Don't Watch Me Cry

——————

Discussion Questions

  1. After releasing several singles and her "Project 11" EP, how do you think Jorja did on her full-length record?

  2. Jorja has often worked with other artists such as Kali Uchis, Khalid and Drake, but with Lost & Found, she said it was important to have it be just her vocally. How did she do carrying an entire project herself?

  3. Are you a bigger fan of her deep cuts like The One and Goodbyes, or do you prefer her more poppy tracks like On My Mind?

  4. Can you relate to theme of losing yourself and later finding yourself? What experiences from your life can you tie into that?

  5. Moving forward, what do you want to see from Jorja? Do you want to see her continue to branch out and work with other artists/producers, or would you prefer her staying closer to her more personal approach she took on this album?
