[ORIGINAL] Rap network analysis in Python - Which rappers collab the most?

Posted: 12 Apr 2019 08:18 AM PDT

Hey all,

I hope this isn't breaking any HHH rules (it got removed yesterday for some reason) - I thought you guys might find this interesting. I scraped thousands of song titles from RapGenius and collected a list of all rapper features.

Here's an example of what I mean:

The A$AP Rocky song 1Train, features six different rappers: (Kendrick Lamar, Action Bronson, Joey Bada$$, Yelawolf, Danny Brown, and Big K.R.I.T.) Six different items – one for each featured artist – get added to the overall features list, with each one noting A$AP Rocky as the original song artist.

(^ Basically, imagine that process repeated 70,000 times.)

Before looking at the final network, here are some important points to note:

1) The relative locations of every artist are only approximate.

2) An artist must have at least 25 scraped song titles for any connections involving that artist to appear.

3) This map makes no distinction between rappers who featured on the song, and rappers "credited" for the song. (That is, J. Cole appearing on a 21 Savage song is treated the same as 21 Savage featuring on a J. Cole song.)

4) No connection is made between two artists who featured on the same song, if neither were credited for the song.

5) Songs must be credited to only one artist on RapGenius. For instance, the song Sunflower is credited to the artist "Post Malone & Swae Lee", rather than just one of the two artists, so it won't be included in the dataset.

Here's a link to the final network map! It's a pretty big image, so I'd recommend opening in a new tab:

Rap networks map

The map does a great job of visualizing different "groups" of rappers who most often work together. Odd Future, Pro Era, and the Wu-Tang Clan (among others) appear to have their own distinct "sections" of the map.

We can also see different styles – or even eras – of rap appear in different areas. The right-hand side of the map includes a lot of 1990s or early 2000s rappers, and most SoundCloud rappers show up farther towards the land. Also, most of the biggest "mainstream" rappers show up towards the center of the map, which I found interesting. DJ Khaled, Lil Wayne, and Rick Ross are the three most "central" rappers of the entire network, and Juicy J, Snoop Dogg and Busta Rhymes all have relatively large data points, which represents the fact that they are most often involved in "paths" between other pairs of rappers.

Hope you guys enjoy! All code is on my Github (@saisenberg) for anyone curious.

Kendrick Lamar speaks on Nipsey

In 2009, I remember trekking cities alongside Nipsey and family. Both performing as opening acts on The Game LAX Tour. Our sprinter van trailed their mobile home from state to state.

Though I was a there as support for my brother Jay Rock, Nipsey greeted me as one of his own. And that was very commendable. Casually I would go out to the crowd and listen to the substance he spewed on stage. Thinking to myself, this is the type of talent I want to be apart of. His charisma and way with words was powerful. But his integrity as a person, made me even more enthused.

I watched a young, ambitious black male orchestrate fellowship amongst the men around him on that tour. Determined to execute one thing — and that was Greatness. Greatness in knowledge, greatness in wealth, and greatness in self.

My curiosity about who he really was started to grow from that moment in time. Was he a product if Crenshaw and Slauson? Was he a radical? Or was he a thinker? That mystique kept me engaged throughout his life career. The years progressed, and my admiration grew from up close and from afar. Watching his interviews, his philosophies, and his work amongst the black community.

Time surely revealed itself. I realized Nipsey was all of those perspectives. But most importantly, he was a vessel from God. As my heart aches for him and his family. I understand that the Most High doesn't make mistakes. I pray that Ermias Foundation continues to blossom. I pray for those who trespass against it.

A true King will be tested in adversity. To stand in fearlessness in what he believes will impact on earth, as well as in heaven. So thank you Nipsey The Radical. Nipsey The Husband. Nipsey The Friend. Nipsey The Great. And from now on, Nipsey The Messenger…... Shalom.

XXL Freshmen overview #1 - Abby Jasmine

Posted: 11 Apr 2019 03:58 PM PDT

Right so /u/israfil_on_sax doesn't seem to be doing this in 2019 so I figured I'd take the mantel, seeing as I'm not doing much this Easter.

Basically I'll be listening to and reviewing the 80 candidates for the 2019 XXL list with full breakdowns of their music and aesthetic and judging whether they are fit for the list based on their originality, music quality and following both online and off.

I'll be doing this in alphabetical order so I'll begin with Abby Jasmine

Abby Jasmine

Age: 20

Sex: Female

Location: Staten Island, New York

Spotify monthly listeners (ATOW): 44,757

Pitch video like/dislike ratio (ATOW): 271:425 (38.9% liked)

Listened to: TRAP MOM

Abby Jasmine got her start on Twitter, which isn't really a typical growth point. Going by @abbn0rmal_ she would upload quick remixes of popular songs with her own lyrics, usually about relationships and typical high school problems. She would turn this into a career of sorts when she uploaded her first commercial song to SoundCloud in November 2017. Titled Long Live, the song was a remix of Baka's Live Up To My Name and featured a music video of Jasmine smoking in a black tracksuit and dancing around in somebody's kitchen with a bottle of Hennessy intercut with shots of her buying a chocolate ice cream – safe to say she was not fully decided on an image at this point.

From here she uploaded a few more tracks onto Soundcloud, Spotify and other such streaming services until her debut EP released late October last year. Titled TRAP MOM, the EP features a confusing aesthetic in the cover art (it's clearly 70s/80s themed yet she's taking pictures with a camera phone?) and 7 tracks about cheating exes, twitter stalkers, side men and hating bitches. The record features production from Crystal Caines and Mitch Mula and has one feature in the form of frequent collaborator and fellow NY native LevyGrey.

I would probably recommend the record for fans of Bryson Tiller, ANTI- era Rihanna and Tinashe, as the record primarily consists of down-tempo croons about relationships that would probably sound better at night in a car with rain coming down. Her bars are really nothing special and she is definitely not bringing anything new to the game, but there's probably a couple songs to be thrown into a late-night driving playlist on here. I was a fan of Front Door, Message and No Hook in particular. The music video for No Hook (uploaded to No Jumper) in particular shows a more focussed image for Jasmine, using many techniques popularised by A$AP Rocky's AWGE directed music videos to give off a gritty "street" image.

So why is she applicable to be an XXL Freshman? Most likely this is down to label work. Signing to Cinematic before even setting up a SoundCloud means that Jasmine has had loads of help in marketing herself and a label like Cinematic that primarily markets hip-hop artists will be firmly focussed on the XXL Freshmen list. She doesn't have the sound, popularity or image to back up her placement on this list and she most definitely should not be on it. Even her newest track, Relax featuring Taylor Belle seems to be taking her in a more RnB focussed direction that doesn't fit at all with the groundwork she's been building. However, if she grows into a stronger of a niche, she could be a larger female voice in the game, rather than just a #relatable Twitter account.

Notable bars:

In a perfect world I'll pour a penny in the Vatican / Then I'll pull up on Donald Trump and shoot him in the abdomen / Fuck a pacifist, I'll pass a fist to any bitch that think her mouth won't get her hit (Why U Mad)

Acting like I'm rich n*gga / You ain't doing shit with your life, lurkin' on my Twitter

Even if the last people on the Earth was you and I / I could never let a pussy get between what's in my thighs (Message)

You said that's your girl but she been sucking dick for Xanax / I don't fuck with thotties get that ho up out my session (Long Live)

Fit for the list? - NO

IF YOU GUYS LIKED THIS PLEASE LET ME KNOW AND I'LL TRY AND GET THEM OUT AT A FASTER RATE. IF YOU DIDN'T LIKE IT PLEASE GIVE ME FEEDBACK

Guide to Cantonese Hip Hop and why it is kind of different from Chinese Hip Hop

Posted: 11 Apr 2019 06:10 PM PDT

This is the Cantonese Rap playlist I've been building for a little while now

https://open.spotify.com/user/5goenu8ro9qr77h5ceo9l4xe7/playlist/38CDvH0GDbmI9bwl9irOQM?si=X3X2RC1NTB6dCSWiU_1hmQ

During the journey of discovering great songs to put together, I have learned a lot about the Cantonese Hip Hop scene (mostly Hong Kong Hip Hop) and wanted to share it with you fine folks.

Firstly, let's briefly get into what the difference is between Chinese Hip Hop and Cantonese Hip Hop. Isn't Cantonese and Chinese the same thing you may ask. Kind of, but no. Cantonese is one of the dialects of the Chinese language, and is the primary and official dialect of Hong Kong and Macau. Mandarin is the dominating dialect of pretty much everywhere else in China (I am oversimplifying here). So Cantonese Hip Hop falls under the umbrella of Chinese Hip Hop (but not the other way around). When you are listening to Chinese Hip Hop (for example the very popular Higher Brothers now), you are most likely hearing Mandarin.

Many people in Hong Kong are very keen about differentiating the label of Chinese Hip Hop with Cantonese Hip Hop. The main reason is the political tension between Hong Kong and Mainland China (a whole other topic on its own). Hong Kong, since being reclaimed by China from British rule, remains under a uniquely different governing body even though technically owned by China. So people in Hong Kong have a lot more freedom in terms of access, speech, and expression. For example, they have access to Google and Youtube whereas people from Mainland China are blocked. There are people in Hong Kong who do not identify themselves as being Chinamen. Some even go as far as despising their counterpart. This is an ongoing thing that is a topic of controversy.

Sorry to veer off there. Back to music. I thought I needed to briefly sum that up because it is somewhat reflected in the music. Since there is much more freedom in Hong Kong, the content of Cantonese Hip Hop is also more unrestricted. There is more swearing, more overly sexualized lyrics, and more lashing out at society/government. In Mainland China, music that glorifies violence/sex will likely be banned, and god help you if you rap or say anything negative about the government. So any of the more hardcore topics in Chinese Hip Hop (Mainland China) remain underground.

OK let's get to the music finally. Every artist I list off I will link to one of their songs (my favorite one or one I feel is most representative of said artist). This is not the most comprehensive list, but is one of artists I think are good or have some good songs.

Currently trending/popular:

Bakerie - a group that consists of 4 guys. Among them is Dough-Boy, an experienced producer with a "Best original song in a film" award on his mantle. My favorite song - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eH-LyOYLt_Y

About hardships of the working class in HK.

The Low Mays - group of 6 young guys. Their songs are filled with profanity and glorifies the gangster lifestyle excessively, to a point of satire/parody.

24Herbs - group of 6. 2 of the members were part of the Hip Hop group LMF, a group widely recognized as the pioneers of Cantonese Hip Hop. They now host an online talk show and release music occasionally.

Fotan Laiki - a female rapper who went viral with one video (a trap song about smoking up). She hasn't released much music since and is dangerously heading into the "one hit wonder" area.

JB - a Filipino rapper who grew up in Hong Kong. He came from a background of dancing. Nice flow and lyrics.

Song that disses negativity/online trolls

Lesser known/underground gems:

GTB - a female duo with a dgaf attitude. GTB stands for Green Tea Bitches. One of the members is Serrini, a singer/songwriter, with some pretty good solo songs. My favorite song - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGZDA2l6ZbU

Kind of taking a stab at the spoiled generation

Keevin - followed this artist a while for his nice lofi instrumentals and beats. Randomly drops a Cantonese Hip Hop album that is good. Releases a lot of music.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HP51yUKL0xk

Animated video with English subtitles which is nice. Good message.

Akiko - male rapper with a lot of sexualized lyrics. Has a unique voice with good flow on top of pretty smooth/chill beats.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIVMNX0jbs0

Song about getting it on.

YankiDin - a female youtuber who started out as a dancer. Releases music on the side but seems pretty active. Cute/seductive rap style.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxajF_-MczA

Luna is a Bep - young female artist. Style is very unpolished over chill lofi beats. Talented lyricist with a lot of potential.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUCwnOs8w1w

Song about the hasty culture of HK

Honorable mentions:

MastaMic - been around the scene for a while. Known for good lyrics and being able to rap at a very fast speed.

LMF - the OGs. Basically introduced Cantonese Hip Hop to the world. Raps a lot about society/government.

Edison Chen - idol pop singer turned Hip Hop advocate. Not that active anymore with music.

MC Jin - made a name for himself with his sick freestyle battles. Pursued Cantonese rap for a little while but is now finding more success in Mainland China.

Heyo - conscious rapper with lyrics that connect at a street level.

FAMA - a comedic duo more known as media personalities (acting, hosting, commercials). Their music has reached more of the mainstream audience because of their profile and easy listening style beats.

If you have made it this far, you are truly a trooper! Here is the link to my playlist again which basically covers what is mentioned above plus some more.
