R/MakingHipHop March Highlights

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 09:49 AM PDT

Greetings from /r/makinghiphop! Last month was the first edition of these, and all the artists were very grateful to everyone who took the time to listen. This month we're a little heavier on vocal tracks and less so on instrumentals. Not a purposeful decision - that's just how it played out this month. Thoughts and feedback are welcome, but keep in mind that comparing these songs and artists to established artists featured here is a little premature. But everyone has to start somewhere and pass through mediocre and good on the way to great, so you never know...

[DISCUSSION] RATKING - So It Goes (5 Years Later)

Posted: 08 Apr 2019 11:00 AM PDT

So It Goes is the debut studio album by New York City hip hop group Ratking, which consisted at the time rappers Wiki and Hak, and rapper-producer Sporting Life. It was released on April 8, 2014 by HXC Recordings. It was entirely engineered by Young Guru. The album's title was inspired by Kurt Vonnegut's novel Slaughterhouse-Five. The album featured collaborations with King Krule, Salomon Faye, and Wavy Spice. The album reached #13 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums, #38 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, and #21 on Rap Albums.

Discussion questions:

Favorite songs/verses/beats?

[SHOTS FIRED] Kendrick Lamar disses Big Sean in leaked "ELEMENT" demo

Posted: 07 Apr 2019 12:42 PM PDT

Snippet

I think his false confidence got him inspired
I can't make them respect you baby, it's not my job
You're finally famous for who you date, not how you rhyme (boy)
Cute ass raps, get your puberty up

Big Sean and Kendrick have been going back and forth at each other with subs since "Control" in 2013. These are lyrics that have been speculated to be subs:

2015: Big Sean on "Me, Myself and I":

Rappers who was killin shit, lately I can't feel that shit
Y'all used to didn't feel my shit and now y'all like, "You hear this shit?"

Ya'll braggin about so and so, like "Oh, he really it?
The new nigga in rap? Well, can he really spit?"
Or do he just hide behind his skits like half of these rappers do
And then ya'll fucking go and praise him and his bitch like they savior of this shit
I'm like "Aw, man. Here we go"

July 2016: Big Sean on "Holy Key":

Woah, I hear a little bit of me in all your favorite rappers
You know it's true, bitch I need respect due

October 2016: Big Sean on "No More Interviews":

And I can't lie like I like this shit like I usually do
And I'm just not impressed by you niggas rapping fast
Who sound like one big asthma attack but trash when I'm rapping it back
Who you put in your top five and claim they the savior of rap

February 2017: Big Sean gets defensive after Charlamagne says Kendrick washed him on "Control": ""No, he didn't. Stop it, stop it, stop it. And, how long ago was that? What year was that? And I still don't feel like I got washed, anyway."

March 2017: Kendrick on The Heart Pt. 4:

My fans can't wait for me to son your punk ass and crush your whole lil shit
I'll Big Pun your punk ass you a scared lil bitch
Tip-toeing around my name nigga you lame
And when I get at you homie don't you just tell me you was just playin
'I was just playing K-Dot, c'mon you know a nigga rock with you, bro'
Shut the fuck up you sound like the last nigga I know
Might end up like the last nigga I know
Oh you don't want to clash? Yeah nigga I know

Kendrick on "HUMBLE": some ppl are convinced that him saying "lil bitch" and shit is directed at Big Sean bc that's his ad-lib.

December 2017: Big Sean on "Big Bidness":

Boy, I'll hop right over you
Who the fuck you think watching over you? (huh?)
I'm God's favorite, you couldn't pray a hundred times a day
To have me over through
I'm the bipolar you, I'm doing what you way too ho to do (ho)
I got a ocean-view overview that reminded me this is overdue
Jeez, I don't got feelings, I just fill seats, I'm on fleek
I don't retreat, I did this shit in my sleep (woah, woah, woah)
Sike, I don't sleep, I don't cuddle
Bitch, I'm the team captain inside the huddle
The man of my house and the man your little brother grew up to (straight)
The man in my hood and all the other hats that I juggle (straight)
You niggas my little cuzzos, little niggas (little niggas)
Nobody sonning me, if I am a sun, I'm the one you look up to
(I look up) Fuck you

April 2019: Big Sean at Dreamville Festival talked for a while about how beef is pointless and how we should be uplifting one another and thanked Kendrick (among others) and said how he appreciates artists that use their platform to lift others up

Update on the 'Joey Bada$$ owes me money' situation in final podcast interview with brandUn DeShay

Posted: 07 Apr 2019 06:00 PM PDT

If you guys recall the thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/hiphopheads/comments/b3ean8/joey_bada_owes_me_money_and_its_sad_cuz_i_fw_him/

I run a podcast that interviews music producers and he was kind enough to be on and give me some time to chat:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5jyBElbHAw

He planned a press run and this podcast is the last interview he might ever do. We chat about his journey through beatmaking, talking about his inspirations, his beats, moving forward and the industry scene chat. Wanted to give you guys the interview a few days early on YouTube, the podcast will be on iTunes, etc. on Wednesday.

EDIT: TL:DR - The situation is still ongoing, but his management did reach out and it looks like it will get resolved. Didn't mean to phrase this as 'clickbait', but there is a lot of great discussion worth listening too aside from this.
