Maria-Cecilia Simone Kelly, AKA TACOBELLA AKA Rico Nasty is a 21 year old Maryland based rapper famous for her unique fusion of pop, hip-hop, trap, and metal. The name Rico comes the fact that her Mom's side of the family hails from Puerto Rico, and she started using Rico Nasty as her Instagram handle when she was a teenager.

Citing her biggest trap influences as Gucci Mane and Chief Keef as well as artists outside of hip-hop like Amy Winehouse and Toro y Moi Rico originally broke onto the scene with help from Lil Yachty on a remix of her track 'Hey Arnold'. She has continuously released music since high-school, and prior to 'Nasty' in 2017 she released two mixtapes: Tales of Tacobella and Sugar Trap 2 the latter of which reaching moderate success with songs like Key Lime OG and Poppin.

While most of her early work definitely brought with it a lot of sugar rather than spice 2018 seemed to mark refinement in Rico Nasty's sound with the introduction of key collaborator throughout 2018 Kenny Beats on the non-album single to start the year 'Smack a Bitch' where Rico Nasty really began to embrace her personality and raspy voice to separate her music from the rest of the pop-trap field, and this continued onto her single 'Rage', and was a sign of things to come going into her project which released on June 15th, 2018 'Nasty'.

Rico's personality shines on one of the hardest and unapologetic trap records of the year. It's an album filled with hilarious one-liners and a ton of hard hitting production credits by her aforementioned collaborator Kenny Beats as well as others, and cements Rico Nasty as one of the most interesting faces entering the trap genre within the last few years.

'Nasty' is a project that more than anything feels like an introduction. With the cover featuring a self portrait and the opening track 'Bitch I'm Nasty' Nasty feels like Rico showing the listener who she is and what she is about. It's a project that gives very little time to breath as you are hit with one trap banger after another. Very few if any projects this year really bring with it the same level of intense energy that this project does for the majority of it's run time, and it's all the more impressive considering that this project only contains two small features from both BlocBoy JB and Lil Gnar on the tracks 'In The Air' and 'Transformer' Respectively

Although Nasty sticks to a fairly concise 36 minutes she does a lot in the 36 minutes. While the highlights of the project are no doubt the more aggressive ones like 'Bitch I'm Nasty', 'Countin' Up, and 'Rage' Rico also shows her capability as an artist to mix up the sound to keep it from being too one dimensional without sacrificing the wit and personality that makes Rico an interesting artist. The track that encapsulates this ability the most is the track 'Pressing Me' where Rico comes through with a hushed delivery over a dark and moody beat that does a great job at breaking up the album into more digestible chunks while still feeling like you are getting what you came to the album to get which is personality

While this album no doubt marks an evolution in Rico Nasty as an artist she does on occasion go back to the more traditional pop-trap songs she was more known for on tracks like 'Hockey' and 'Won't Change' but even though in a sense she is bringing it back to her roots as an artist with the help of the capable producers on this project these songs sound much more engaging and crisp in comparison to much of her old body of work. This album in a way feels like a coming of age album. Accepting her attitude and personality for who she is rather than what she was or what people expected of her. As you start to get going on the 2nd half of the album you get Rico at her most introspective on the track 'Life Back' with the hook:

Everybody wanna act like they know me They said they want the old me Back, back, back, back, back, back, back

It's very fitting that after a song that keeps it calm and poppy while discussing her evolution as an artist that she'd follow it with one of the most intense songs on the album with the track 'Transformer' featuring Lil Gnar. Where Rico gives one of her highest energy deliveries on the album during the hook.

As one of the few features on the projects Lil Gnar also compliments Rico very nicely to give us something hard outside of Rico's normal inflection she gives in the more aggressive cuts, and is definitely the most intense verse you'll find on the entire project. If there is one thing to be praised about this album from a structure standpoint is how fun it is. There is rarely a dull moment, and the entire album flies by as you are bombarded by bar after bar and killer beat after killer beat throughout the entire project.

By this point we begin to enter the final stretch of the project starting with another introspective pop-trap cut on the track 'Why Oh Why' where she dives a bit deeper another recurring theme throughout the album which is her spending habits. Spending money with her new found success is something she enjoys, but at the same time it also brings with it a lot of complications especially with giving her a bit of a superiority complex, as well as fear that those around her are only there to take what she's earned. It feels like once again she uses another one of her hooks to really inform the listener as to what is going through her head. While all this success begins to build all she keeps asking herself is:

Don't let life pass you by, waste money on what I buy I don't know why, oh why? I don't know why, oh why?

It's this introspection that you get on tracks like this, 'Life Back', and 'Lala' to close out the album that really add another layer on top of Rico Nasty as an artist that she uses to separate herself from the field when it comes to trap music. Although obviously not the first to do it the way she tackles topics even if they are brief feels like a breath of fresh air both on the album and the current music landscape in general without coming off as preachy or overly sentimental.

While not technically the end of the album 'Rage' is certainly the climax. As a song I think it mixes the best elements of hip-hop, trap, and Metal with a bit of a punk flare better than almost any other song that has been released as a part of this trend, and feels like a culmination of everything both Rico and this project have been working towards in 2018. Hard is an understatement when it comes to this track, and it shows her ability to not just dabble in certain sub-genres of trap and hip-hop, but to fully embrace it and create something that is uniquely her own.

The one big success of this album above all else is that it always remains entertaining. It's a project that never strays into dull territory whether it's switching between the hard hitting tracks like 'Trust Issues' and 'Rage' or when it goes into the more poppy tracks like 'Hockey' and Won't Change'. Or even when it get's more introspective on songs like 'Life Back' and 'Why Oh Why' the album never loses it's sense of fun. It's a triumph in trap that deserves respect, and should put Rico Nasty on the list of names you should know because the biggest thing to take away from this project is that Rico is here, and she's here to stay.

Background Griselda Blanco was perhaps the most prolific cocaine queen pin of her era. She was infamous for having numerous sexual partners, some of whom didn't escape with their lives. Behaviour not unlike a Scorpion. So when Westside Gunn went looking for a symbol to represent his record imprint and fashion label of course he went for the dangerous and eye catching Scorpion, the name Griselda by Fashion Rebels(GxFR) being attached to all works of his thereafter.

If you asked Westside Gunn, he would tell you he isn't a rapper. He's a fashion designer who raps. Coming from Buffalo, NY(A place infamous for poverty and crime). It's a hard place to try and be successful with your fashions. West has talked about making a dozen hoodies and taking months to sell them. Now he'll do limited runs of 3-400 hoodies and they're gone in minutes. His highly sought after vinyls will release at 11:00 and have every variant in every quantity sold out by 11:02. I would know, I've seen it happen. His come up was unlikely and incredibly lucky. But if you ask West it was always manifest destiny.

He was doing dirt in the early 00's when his cousin Machine Gun Black(brother to Benny the Butcher another GxFR MC) got shot and killed. West had to turn himself into the Feds not long after. You'd think this was rock bottom but West had further to fall still. After getting out of the feds he got knocked again and had to go back, around this time his brother Conway was shot in the head twice. He miraculously survived but still suffers the lasting effects of this attempt on his life. Westside made a promise to himself while imprisoned. That he would turn his life around, and take the rap game more seriously. It was his way out, and he got out.

After years of struggling and pressing forward his hard work and diligence paid off. In 2016 Westside Gunn released the much acclaimed FLYGOD. With features from the likes of Danny Brown, Roc Marciano, Action Bronson and production from the likes of The Alchemist, Statik Selektah and Apollo Brown. The buzz around West and Griselda was growing daily. A fervent fan base was ferociously devouring everything they could get their hands on. It was at this point that the Flygod met with the Rap God. According to Gunn it was love at first sight. Mathers was already a fan of Griselda Records and knew he wanted to sign them. For the first time, a Buffalo rapper was signed by a major record label. Of course it wasn't just one MC, it was three.

The influence of being signed to Shady hasn't quite shown yet. But perhaps that's for the best. Eminem isn't stupid, he knows not to mess with a good thing. Provide support where you can but otherwise leave the Griselda crew to their own devices and they will consistently create coke rap commandments. It was in this environment that we found ourselves when Westside created his sophomore album Supreme Blientele. Usually artists have trouble following up an excellent debut project. Not Gunn, ever productive he had already released a number of EP's and singles in the period between these two albums. He had no trouble however, making this project stand out from his usual fare(which is still fantastic). The usual ingredients are there, Daringer(Griselda's in house producer) , Benny, Conway, Alchemist (who's said many times that he's a huge fan of GxFR) but there are extra elements that give this album an energy and spirit that puts the listener in mind of the classic fare of the 90s. Raekwon(who has publicly declared Griselda to be the wave of the future for the drug rap game), Jay Z, Master P, Ghostface Killah are all clear inspirations. The album is sample heavy and percussion is sparse leaving lots of room for the MC's to do their thing. The anticipation for this album amongst Griselda fans was unbelievable. Westside had a lot to live up to, people thought FLYGOD was the best work he had ever done and they didn't believe he could surpass it. They were wrong. Simple as that.

Review

Supreme Blientele is a coronation. After spending a lifetime looting and killing, the usurpers made their claim to the throne. The only ruler that compares is Ghengis Khan. Gunn is in the empire building business and thus far he's done a job comparable to the man who ran a quarter of the world. Listening to Supreme Blientele is like watching a pride of lions maul… well everything. Hyenas, ostriches, cheetahs, other wack rappers. It's like a great Serengeti safari and we get to see this pride feast. From the first song it's clear that GxFR is not playing fair. Jadakiss comes through and flows fantastic over that ghostly sample and those teased strings and the skittering piano, he hits us with one of his best verses in years. Doesn't mean shit. He gets outshone to an absurd degree. His light shines bright but it's insignificant when the Sun hits with all its brilliance. Benny shows why's he called the Butcher and Gunn spits like he hasn't eaten in years and his next meal depends on this verse being the best on this song. Almost didn't happen with the way Benny was spitting.

Gunn's energy throughout this album is undeniable and it's because of this energy, that in an era of 7 song albums that don't ever run longer than ~ 25 minutes; Gunn can come through with an 17 track project that's double the length of those shorter projects and keep the listener interested the whole way through. People almost fetishize Pusha T's well known "YEUGH" ad-lib and rightly so, it's a great ad-lib. I contend that each of Gunn's three signature ad-libs carries more weight and impact. From the BOOM BOOM BOOM, to the Scott Hall inspired A-YO or even just a simple GRRRRRRRRRRRRR mimicking automatic fire from a Machine Gun(R.I.P Black). The fact that the percussion on this album is laid back and sparse and not the usual triplet rattling hi hat business we've become used to doesn't mean this album is less energetic or ear grabbing. It's almost more so. Instead of shouting desperately for attention and threatening to kill peoples whole families just to get some eyes on their music. Gunn doesn't yell. He speaks with confidence and he flows like butter. You pay attention to him, cause he's the guy to truly be afraid of.

Gunn carries tracks on his own with ease, he could've done the whole project featureless. But this coronation is also a chance for his family to catch some shine, and good lord do they. Brutus, is one of the best rap songs of this decade. This is only a bold claim if you haven't heard the song. Featuring production from the legendary Pete Rock the track features a bouncy guitar sample and some shimmering synths. The song begins with a pitched and warped ambulance siren. A premonition of the gruesome scene left in the wake of this onslaught. Benny, Conway, and the patriarch Gunn spit so viciously on this track it caught the ear of Jay-Z, the most successful coke rapper of his generation. Jay put this track in his best of 2018 playlist, and while it is one of the best tracks to come out this year. It's nothing special for those 3. The track details their proficiency at flipping drugs, their love of fashion and their amassed wealth. I say this with no hyperbole, the best drug rap song of 2018 is no big deal to the guys who made it.

It's not just Gunn's brother and cousin who put in work on this album. Gunn's own daughter Westside Pootie features on Amherst Station in one of the cutest moments on any album I've ever heard. Yet it still manages to be the hardest flex to ever grace my ears. Westside's youngest daughter speaks on the fact that all of her father's imitators don't understand that wealth is not what makes him great and that (FLY)GOD is the greatest. She then calls out these wannabe rappers for still being broke. Even she understands their money is fake. This moment is followed by one of the sweetest beats on Blientele. Amherst Station is a subway station in Buffalo and Gunn assuredly spent a lot of time travelling to and from it. The beat samples What makes me love you by The Sequins and and the song serves as a sort of nostalgia trip discussing dealings during his come up and Gunn finishes saying "Catch me at the Amherst Station", he says it with an affinity that tells us he clearly thinks fondly of the place.

RVD is a chance for a few Griselda staples to truly flex their muscles as Daringer shows why he is the king of the grimy piano sample. A simple loop can become the nastiest thing you've ever heard with some manipulation from Daringer. But the true highlight of this track is the incredible Keisha Plum. A grade school homie of Gunn's, they've been tight always. She's had a feature on basically every Gunn project you can think of. Her voice is like chocolate wrapped in velvet dipped in caramel. Plum is an excellent writer and her every word is captivating. She rides the beat like she owns it. "What would Griselda do?" "Shoot them before they can shoot you." Clearly Gunn takes this advice to heart.

The Alchemist produced track Elizabeth features a horn sample that is as smooth as silk and features vocal samples from Randy Savage and Mick Foley. Gunn is a man of diverse interests. From fashion, to wrestling to dealing drugs. He's got something for everyone, a lyric that could make any rap listener turn their head towards the music and smile. Whether it's cause he reps their favourite brand "I know some niggas only skate over supreme shit" or cause of the litany of witty bars that permeates this album. It is my assertion that the whole Griselda crew has mass appeal and it's seems that this explosion in popularity is imminent. Gunn can sing, he can rap, he's a genius fashion designer, a very smart manager and he's got authenticity that nobody living in the rap game can match.

This coronation serves as notice to any rapper faking the funk. Your head is going to be positioned on a very sharp stick if you get in Gunn's way. In the midst of all the revelry surrounding Gunn's newfound success there is a tinge of sadness. We lost a legend recently. R.I.P to Mean Gene Okerlund, a legend to the wrestling world, a legend in the eyes of Westside Gunn. He was immortalized on the album by The Alchemist and Gunn. They got a chance to pay homage while Gene was still alive and now it serves as a tribute to one of the most important voices of pop culture in the 80s. The album serves as a fitting tribute to a number of figures, including one you might not have expected from a Buffalo NY rapper. DJ Screw is referenced with his chopped and screwed style being aped on the track Stefflon Don, Gunn has gone on the record saying he's been a fan of Screws for a long time and takes a chance to reference his ingenious style at least once on each of his projects.

It's in this run of tracks from Elizabeth to Brossface Brippler that Gunn shows his planning ability off. Carrying the wrestling theme from track to track starting with Elizabeth and moving to Macho Man and Mean Gene before referencing Chris Benoit and Sabu which leads into the track called Sabu which has a vocal sample of none other than Busta Rhymes who appears on the very next track. This album really is a masterpiece in pacing and flow. Speaking of Busta Rhymes, good lord this man went off. He really gave the Fashion Rebels a challenge. His voice sounded different, like it was layered twice and lubed with WD-40. He manages to make a Salt Bae reference while talking about cooking crack and it's just awesome. Busta Rhymes really is special when he's not trying to rhyme as fast as possible. The song features Alchemist production with a heavenly vocal sample looped and a drum loop serving as a rhythmic base for the whole track, piano chords included to jump off of. Benny and Gunn go off but that's to be expected at this point.

These guys are so good I find myself almost becoming jaded. You start to think to yourself, "ah yeah I've heard rappers talk about cooking crack a million and one ways" but whenever I'm listening to any of the GxFR MC's they manage to make these concepts fresh with their incredibly intelligent rhymes and beats. I expect to be bumping this album on my deathbed and still enjoy their bars. This album shows that drug raps will always have a place in rap. Some people feel like the whole concept is outdated and that doing drugs is more hip than serving them. Questlove (who said Supreme Blientele was his favourite rap album of the year how's that for a co-sign?) said the album sounds like it could've come out in 1995. To some that might seem like he's saying the album is dated. To me it's an assertion that the album was timeless from inception. It could've existed in any era in the history of rap and been heralded as a fantastic project.

The finishing stretch of this album has some of the best moments on a project chock full of them. Harry Fraud produces and CRIMEAPPLE features on the song Spanish Jesus. Which features prominently a guitar riffing and wailing with some faint drums and it creates one of the most special and effective uses of guitars I've ever heard in rap. CRIMEAPPLE is a killer and he's a deadly sharp MC with a Mexican background that gives him a really unique flavour. Keep your eyes on that dude.

The Steiners in their era were a unique duo of powerhouses with a flashy high flying style. This name clearly inspired everyone on this track. Pete Rock laced the beat with a beautiful piano sample from a Janet Jackson song and Elzhi showed the hell up on the cut. Elzhi without question has my favourite flow on the whole album. He made himself inseparable from the beat. He wasn't the flashiest MC on the project but he did have a very lyrical, dextrous performance and he made his mark. The Steiners is his track. Not that Gunn didn't give him a good run for his money. If Conway and Gunn weren't already an established duo Elzhi and Gunn would be a rap duo to give the likes of EPMD, Tribe and Outkast a run for their money.

Roc Marciano slides through on a self- produced track to show his support for his friend Gunn and get a piece of the action for himself. The vocal sample, the vinyl static, the drums, the piano chords. It all comes together to produce a beautiful package, not unlike Ric Martel the tracks namesake. Gunn and Roc Marci flow over this beat with impunity.

Statik Selektah disgusts me sometimes, his beat work is just gross. The eponymous track WESTSIDE needed to come correct if it was gonna bear the name of the signature artist and Statik came through with the most cinematic beat on the whole project. With an epic violin/vocal swell that punctuates certain moments and violins lacing the rest of the beat along with the vintage scratched chorus. It's just beautiful. The world needs more Statik/Gunn.

When Anderson .Paak made the freshman cover in his year he was asked who should've made it that didn't. He said Westside Gunn. Gunn recognizes realness and the two have been friends since. It's incredible how connected that Gunn has become and it's all because he's just undeniable. He knew he had a great product and he's had faith in himself from the jump. It didn't matter who told him he couldn't do it, it didn't matter that no MC had ever come from Buffalo and blown up, it didn't matter who didn't believe. Gunn knew he'd end up in this position with the crown about to be put on his head. WrestleMania 20 was the event when finally after years of grinding and surely times of hopelessness, Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit had reached the summit of their careers. They had made it farther than anyone would have ever expected them to go. This song, 2018, this is Gunn's WrestleMania 20. But he still has further to go. Anderson .Paak has the voice of an angel and Gunn has employed it to talk mad shit on all the non believers and the haters. He did not come for jokes, he didn't come for games. He definitely didn't come to play with the lames. 9th wonder lets a guitar take prominence in the beat with a vocal sample playing the supporting role to Anderson's vocals. Gunn doesn't take this opportunity to celebrate his victory, he continues to talk about killing and robbing and mobbing and dealing. Cause that's how he got to where he's gotten, and that's gonna get him where he's going.

The last track on this album doesn't even feature Gunn, just brother AA Rashid. Produced by Harry Fraud this track features light flutes and dramatic drums in the background while Rashid lays down the GxFR manifesto. If you want to understand why so many people from Joe Budden to Charlemagne to Royce to of course Eminem have co-signed these guys, listen to this. They do not participate in attention seeking behavior, they care about the art, they take care with the packaging. Gunn is such an entrepreneur, he has maximised his fan base in a way nobody else has. They gladly pay 20 dollars for the digital projects, they scoop up the CDs and the Vinyls, they buy the fashions. Westside Gunn, Griselda, they are playing this rap game the way it should be played. They have it all figured out. Gunn's style is old school but his plays are all futuristic. By the time the rap game catches up to Westside Gunn, he'll be long gone. Enjoy it while you can. 2019 is a year long celebration of the King of drug raps. So bow down, pay homage, and definitely listen to the Rap Album of the year, Supreme Blientele.

[DISCUSSION] Who Runs Rap in 2019? Quantifying the Most Popular Rappers Right Now.

I made a post about quantifying the XXL Freshman List a little while ago and it was pretty well received, so I figured I'd make one in a similar vein. Here I use data to quantify who the biggest rappers in the game are right now.

I looked at nine factors: Google Trends , Spotify streams (monthly listeners), Youtube views (top 5 tracks), Instagram/Twitter followers (whichever account has more), RIAA certifications, first week pure sales, first week total sales, and Billboard Hot 100 hits (all over the past three years). With Billboard I made up a simple formula calles BP. Essentially BP rewards those who have more charting and higher charting tracks. With RIAA I used a similar formula, awarding 3 points for a platinum certification and 1 point for a gold certification.

I measured these factors for a multitude of rappers including:
