Personally found it to be not only Tyler's best body of work but my favourite album of 2017. There really isn't a song I don't like, with pretty much all the tracks being in rotation throughout the past year.

Hip-Hop Listening Club of the Week #256: The Jacka - The Jack Artist

Posted: 13 Jul 2018 03:50 PM PDT

Welcome to HHH Listening Club!

Today we'll be listening to The Jack Artist by The Jacka

Background

From wiki: The Jack Artist is the second solo album by Rapper The Jacka. The album was The Jacka's first album to be released on his independent label "The Artist Records" and was sold "Straight out of the trunk" and sold an incredible number of units.

I'm way too late on this already, so I'm just going to copy a section of this 2005 review of the album:

The first thing that makes "The Jack Artist" so dope is the production by Rob Lo. Though Maki and Mob Figaz's own Husalah both contribute strong tracks to the album, Rob Lo is the common denominator that takes every song to the next level. "Never Blink" features a soulful voice sample and smooth piano accompaniment along with a commanding bass line. "Iller Clip" is just as soulful, but this time features a sweet string sample along with another dope voice sample on the hook. Maki's "Barney (More Crime)" maintains the albums soulful and melodic vibe with a cascading voice sample and another attention grabbing bass line. By now some of you may be thinking Rob Lo is just another producer cashing in on Kanye's sample resurgence, but Rob Lo and his Blahk Operah Muzic have crafted a style on their own. It maintains the Bay area's love for deep bass lines that play center stage, but manages to balance that with extremely soulful and emotional melodies. Even when Rob Lo goes into party mode, the beats are as soulful as anything else on the album. "Girls Say" would be playing on radios across the nation were it not for the fact that Jacka is an independent artist. The bass line plays the melody this time around, layered with soft bells and well placed female voice samples. "Get Out There" features a smooth R&B hook as well outstanding instrumentation by Rob Lo.

Album: The Jack Artist

Label: The Artist Records

Producer(s): Roblo, Maki

Representing: Bay Area

Jay Z releases statement after Philadelphia Mayor’s office announces they are moving the festival

Posted: 18 Jul 2018 12:20 PM PDT

"This is the last year MIA will be held on the Parkway," Sarah Reyes, deputy communications director for the mayor's office, said in a statement to the Inquirer and Daily News on Tuesday.

http://www.philly.com/philly/entertainment/music/made-in-america-2019-festival-philadelphia-20180717.html

Full statement here

The Made in America festival is a multicultural platform that represents strength, freedom of speech, and perseverance for artists and music lovers. Philadelphia, an iconic city, represents those ideals. The location is integral to the pulse of the festival. The [Benjamin Franklin] Parkway is a cultural arts center that is symbolic to the more than 600 artists who have performed at this event. The Parkway captures the freedom and spirit of inclusivity that drew us to the City of Brotherly Love. The celebratory nature and essence of this festival has inspired locals as well as visitors from across the nation to enjoy Labor Day in Philadelphia.

We are disappointed that the mayor of the city of Philadelphia would evict us from the heart of the city, through a media outlet, without a sit-down meeting, notice, dialogue, or proper communication. It signifies zero appreciation for what Made In America has built alongside the phenomenal citizens of this city. In fact, this administration immediately greeted us with a legal letter trying to stop the 2018 event.

Since 2012, Made in America, one of the only minority-owned festivals, has had a positive $102.8 million economic impact to Philadelphia, and the festival has paid $3.4 million in rent to the city. Made in America employs more than 1,000 Philadelphians each day and 85 percent of our partners are Philadelphia-based companies.

We have studies and reports that prove the festival significantly contributes to Philadelphia's tourism bottom line. We cannot comment if the mayor has reviewed any of these materials.

We consider this stance a failure on the mayor's part. Is this an accurate representation of how he and his administration treat partners that economically benefit his city? Do they regularly reject minority-owned businesses that want to continue to thrive and grow alongside his city's people?

In addition to contributing to Philadelphia, since its inception, Made in America has donated $2.9 million to the United Way of Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey. Cause Village, the festival's philanthropic footprint and hub for social action, averages more than 15,000 social actions taken over the [festival's] two days via ongoing partnerships with more than 56 charitable and activist organizations representing all causes.

How does an administration merely discard an event that generates millions in income and employs the city's people as if we are disposable now that we have served our purpose? The city is right in one respect; the first Made in America festival took place when there was a great need for tourism. By their admission, the festival first started as a "unique attraction to the city on an otherwise quiet Labor Day weekend. Over the years, tourism has grown overall."

Our question is, "How do you think that tourism grew, Mayor Kenney?"

We will discuss our options internally and handle accordingly.

Jay-Z is a rapper, entrepreneur, and founder of Made in America.
