Hip-Hop Listening Club of the Week #252: Mach Hommy - HBO (Haitian Body Odor)

Posted: 01 Jun 2018 11:02 AM PDT

Welcome to HHH Listening Club!

Today we'll be listening to Haitian Body Odor by Mach Hommy

Background: courtesy of XXL

Haitian Body Order is a 18-track album that consists of some production from August Fanon, Xavier Anderson, Roc Marciano and Camouflage Monk. It also has features from Conway and Keisha Plum. The studio effort catches Hommy rapping about multiple women laying in the bed on records such as "Plenty", living his life thoroughly and quoting the motto M.O.B. on "Bey Six," rappers with sour faces and tucking the lil uzi in the trunk on "Midnight Xpress" and some spoken word on "Michelle Ma Belle."

The album reflects the era of hip-hop where simplicity was everything. The production and the rhymes are very catchy, but all in all extremely straight forward and direct.

Nipsey Hussle On Kanye West Wearing The MAGA Hat: “It Was A Kick In The Gut”

Posted: 05 Jun 2018 08:37 AM PDT

After talking about his new tour, the 4-minute discussion quickly transitioned into Nipsey's decision to put a photo of Kanye West wearing a "Make America Great Again" hat on the screen behind him during his performance of "Fuck Donald Trump" at the Broccoli City Festival in Washington, D.C. back in April.

Nipsey wanted to clear the air that he wasn't taking a shot at Kanye, but was just trying to find a visual representation that matched up with where the conversation was going. "I wouldn't even consider that a personal jab at dude," he said. "I just felt like when I was doing visuals for these songs, it was no more fitting a piece of art or picture that represented how people felt about the president, and what the convo around dude was at the time."

However, Nipsey did admit that when Kanye was spotted wearing the MAGA hat that it felt like a kick in the gut to him & the people.

"As people, me coming from the street, representing the street, that's how we all felt when we seen that dude with that hat on, like it was a kick in the gut," he said.

I Thought About Killing You - Ye

Posted: 05 Jun 2018 08:04 PM PDT

After the very first listen of Kanye's 8th studio album 'Ye' I was unsure about the opening track 'I Thought About Killing You'. After several more listens I came to a conclusion – This track was written by Kanye for Kanye.

Kanye's supposed bipolarity is a recurring theme throughout the album and I believe this theme starts with this opening track. Kanye opens the song by stating that "The most beautiful thoughts are always besides the darkest" and follows this up by stating that "Today I seriously thought about killing you". After my initial listen I thought nothing of this but Kanye being Kanye, until I listened again.

My thought is that Kanye is speaking to himself about his own suicidal thoughts. This is where his bipolarity comes into play. I believe that Kanye identifies with his happier more lively self, and while his sudden states of depression are a part of who he is, he may see these thoughts as those of an outsider. Just as he says "I love myself way more than I love you", 'you' being Kanye's depressed thoughts.

This conclusion is only furthered by the following lines "Don't say this, don't say that. Just say it out loud, just to see how it feels. Weigh all the options, nothings off the table." Here I believe that Kanye may be battling the stigma of suicide. While it often is not talked about, it is seen as a viable option for those with depression and other mental health issues.

So at first glance I saw nothing but typical God-complex Kanye West, but after listening and contemplating I believe Kanye may be trying to share a part of his struggle which seems to only make him that much more human... or I'm just reaching.

J Prince on Sway in the Morning confirms that a “career ending” response track exists

Posted: 04 Jun 2018 09:12 AM PDT

J Prince: "After speaking with Kanye, cus I spoke with the brother, and he didn't' want this. I saw this going to a place that I feel would have ended his career if Drake would've put out this song that he had on him. And definitely would've hurt families and we're not in it for that. That's not Drake's character to tear a man down to that extent."

"A lot of people sit back when Biggie and 2pac were in the midst of battle and you wonder how these things go here - this is how they go here. When you "your momma, your daddy" and friends start feeling a type of way, before you know it – its going down."

Interviewer: So he did have a response?

J Prince: "Oh no doubt about it. The ingredients were overwhelming. I know for a fact that it would've been bad for Kanye and my man. It wouldn't have been good, its beyond music at that point. Its gonna affect the livelihood, its gonna interfere with his entire lifestyle from that day forward."

Interviewer: Did you have him press the delete button? Do you think it would ever leak?

J Prince: "No, I don't think it would leak because he gave his word. And me knowing Drake like I know him, he has a word. And until I see differently, we bleed differently."
