Runner Up: Touch The Sky

You're never too late to comment! Remember this thread is on contest mode for the first 12 hours!

  • Before you comment please CTRL+F to see if your song has been said, if it has been said your comment will be deleted!

  • If you see duplicate comments, report the newer one so mods will delete it!

  • Please provide links with your votes!

  • Remember just because a hook may be iconic that does necessarily mean it's their best hook.

  • Make sure you don't post the same hook as someone else!

  • Voting for best hook will close 12 hours from the time this was posted

  • Taking suggestions for next week just DM me!

  • This could also be any feature that he does

  • The artist has to rap/sing the hook and it can't be a feature doing it, for example Gucci Mane's Lemonade like last week.

Introduction: Hello r/hiphopheads, I will be running the best hook thread once a week every Sunday! This will be run very similarly to the Best Verse Threads we had a while ago, as you can see the format is almost identical to the old threads. All you have to do is just post your favorite Kanye West hook with a link to the hook. And if you want to, you can quote the hook word for word in your comment. The comment with the most upvotes will be deemed that artists best hook! And at the end of the year we will decide the best hook of the ones we collected! This is my first time doing anything like this so any recommendations to formatting, anything else helpful would be great!

Biography: Kanye Omari West born June 8, 1977) is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur and fashion designer. Born in Atlanta and raised in Chicago, West first became known as a producer for Roc-A-Fella Records in the early 2000s, producing and co-producing hit singles for artists such as Jay-Z and Talib Kweli. Intent on pursuing a solo career as a rapper, West released his debut album The College Dropout in 2004 to widespread critical and commercial success, and founded the record label GOOD Music. He went on to pursue a variety of styles on subsequent albums Late Registration (2005), Graduation (2007), and the polarizing 808s & Heartbreak (2008). In 2010, he released his fifth album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy to rave reviews from critics, and followed with the collaborative album Watch the Throne (2011) with Jay-Z. West released his abrasive sixth album Yeezus to further critical praise in 2013, and his seventh 'unfinished playlist' album The Life of Pablo in 2016. West's outspoken views and life outside of music have received significant mainstream attention. He has been a frequent source of controversy for his conduct at award shows, on social media, and in other public settings, as well as his comments on the music and fashion industries, U.S. politics, and race. As a fashion designer, he has collaborated with Nike, Louis Vuitton, and A.P.C. on both clothing and footwear, and have most prominently resulted in the YEEZY collaboration with Adidas beginning in 2013. He is the founder and head of the creative content company DONDA. West is among the most acclaimed musicians of the 21st century. He has sold more than 100 million digital downloads and 21 million albums worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time. He has won a total of 21 Grammy Awards, making him one of the most awarded artists of all time and the most Grammy-awarded artist of his generation. Three of his albums have been included and ranked on Rolling Stone's 2012 update of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list. Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2005 and 2015.

If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye (you can get more specific but that's enough imo). And then someone will respond with X, Y, and Z

You can also recommend an artist/project/scene

Example: You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats.

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

Also the more descriptive you guys are with your posts the easier it is to help you find what you want, just stating an artists name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

Look through past posts here

ALSO please check out this thread for a list of some of the most popular recommendation requests and the suggestions provided

Hip-Hop Listening Club of the Week #251: L*Roneous Da'Versifier - Imaginarium

Posted: 18 May 2018 09:20 AM PDT

Welcome to HHH Listening Club!

Today we'll be listening to Imaginarium by L*Roneous Da'Versifier

This album was selected by /u/GaryTheJerk

Background via AllMusic:

Being a free-thinking musician in the 21st century world of highly overexposed hip-hop sometimes equated to being a persona non grata. While many of hip-hop's respected luminaries chose not to rock the boat when industry battle lines were drawn, some artists chose to forego the mainstream altogether. This was the decision of many a talented underground MC/producer who stuck to their guns and made their own brand of music on smaller labels that would not force them to kowtow to the demands of the market.

The Bay Area's L*Roneous is one such artist that chose to paddle his way upstream with an abstract style reminiscent of fellow North Coast forerunners Del tha Funkee Homosapien and Souls of Mischief and Los Angeles' the Pharcyde and Freestyle Fellowship. L*Ron's limited-release debut, Imaginarium, originally surfaced in 1998 on Ocean Floor Records, but the MC's microphone mastery was only witnessed by a small circle. The style was lucid yet leaked with hallucinogenic abstraction and tongue-twisting flights of fancy. L*Ron's metaphorical madness was a perfect fit for young producer DJ Zeph's acidic B-boy beats. The chosen few who were able to place L*Ron's name and verbal template into their memory banks hoped for the sake of hip-hop that he would be heard from again. In the late '90s, the MC went on to establish connections with a number of the Golden State's underground mainstays (Project Blowed, Living Legends) and worked with such artists as Freestyle Fellowship's Mikah9 and Abstract Rude. But in terms of heavy studio work, the cryptic MC kept things mostly on the hush, releasing only a few singles in Japan and on underground outposts in the States here and there. Fledgling Bay Area label 6months Distribution got wind of L*Ron's bona fide talents and made concerted efforts to give the artist his due exposure. Feeling that L*Ron's avant-garde style of 1998 had found its ripple in time and that the underground needed to reclaim some of its plundered principalities, the label reissued the artist's Imaginarium album in June of 2002.

Notes from selector /u/GaryTheJerk:

Imaginarium by L'Roneous is widely considered a classic among the very limited number of people who have actually heard the album. The album wasn't pushed by the label at the time it was released, plus Napster was booming at the time, so the album never really received the recognition it deserved outside of hip-hop fans up familiar with the Bay Area and Los Angeles underground hip-hop scenes.

Before his critically-acclaimed debut Imaginarium, L'Roneous honed his skills with the band Last 2 Serve, a group of jazz musicians (one of whom was a founding member of Haiku D'etat) under the tutelage of acid jazz trio The Broun Fellinis that featured emcees L'Roneous and Queue as the frontmen. While less experimental than the music of Last 2 Serve, a heavy jazz influence can be heard in the production by DJ Zeph (who produced the album in its entirety,) which is a perfect match for L-Ron's effortless and abstract delivery. L'Ron's unique vocabulary and vivid storytelling make Imaginarium a compelling listen and one of my favorite albums of all-time.

[Discussion] Playboi Carti - Die Lit

Posted: 18 May 2018 05:31 AM PDT

It's been a week, and I have not been able to stop listening to this record. Any thoughts, opinions, comments?

I really liked Pitchfork's metaphor of the album being a sugar high - every slat ad-lib and Pi'erre beat drop really feels like a quick dopamine boost. That said, I also think that the leaks ultimately hurt the album - some of the songs feel like rushed replacements to tracks that were leaked. This is all conjecture, but maybe Carti's team didn't want to drop an album that had already been mostly leaked. I've created my own version of the album with some of the leaks incorporated into it, and I have to say it flows so much better.

The big debate that I've been having with other fans is how this compares to his self-titled album. How do you think they compare? Any personal favorite tracks off of Die Lit? What makes it good/bad to you?
