Background/Description (courtesy of allmusic.com)

One of the cornerstones of the New York hardcore movement, The Infamous is Mobb Deep's masterpiece, a relentlessly bleak song cycle that's been hailed by hardcore rap fans as one of the most realistic gangsta albums ever recorded. Given Mobb Deep's youthful age and art-school background, it's highly unlikely that The Infamous is drawn strictly from real-life experience, yet it's utterly convincing, because it has all the foreboding atmosphere and thematic sweep of an epic crime drama. That's partly because of the cinematic vision behind the duo's detailed narratives, but it's also a tribute to how well the raw, grimy production evokes the world that Mobb Deep is depicting. The group produced the vast majority of the album itself, with help on a few tracks from the Abstract (better known as Q-Tip), and establishes a spare, throbbing, no-frills style indebted to the Wu-Tang Clan. This is hard, underground hip-hop that demands to be met on its own terms, with few melodic hooks to draw the listener in. Similarly, there's little pleasure or relief offered in the picture of the streets Mobb Deep paints here: They inhabit a war zone where crime and paranoia hang constantly in the air. Gangs are bound together by a code of fierce loyalty, relying wholly on one another for survival in a hopeless environment. Hostile forces -- cops, rivals, neighborhood snitches -- are potentially everywhere, and one slip around the wrong person can mean prison or death. There's hardly any mention of women, and the violence is grim, serious business, never hedonistic. Pretty much everything on the album contributes to this picture, but standouts among the consistency include "Survival of the Fittest," "Eye for a Eye," "Temperature's Rising," "Cradle to the Grave," and the classic "Shook Ones, Pt. 2." The product of an uncommon artistic vision, The Infamous stands as an all-time gangsta/hardcore classic.

Guidelines

This is an open thread for you to share your thoughts on the album. Avoid vague statements of praise or criticism. This is your chance to practice being a critic. It's fine for you to drop by just to say you love the album, but let's try and step it up a bit!!!

How has this album affected hip-hop? WHY do you like this tape? What are the best tracks? Do you think it deserves the praise it gets? Is it the first time you've listened to it? What's your first impression? Have you listened to the artist before? Explain why you like it or why you don't.

DON'T FEEL BAD ABOUT BEING LATE!!!! Discussion throughout the week is encouraged.

Next week's EAOTW will be Naughty by Nature - Poverty's Paradise

The 2018 NPR Music Tiny Desk Contest to discover a great unknown artist to come play a Tiny Desk concert is now open! Anyone interested?

Posted: 06 Mar 2018 07:29 AM PST

NPR Music's Tiny Desk Concert series has hosted over 600 concerts in our office. We've had acts like Anderson .Paak, Wilco, John Legend, Hozier, Chance The Rapper, Tyler, The Creator and Iron & Wine. We've hosted the Tiny Desk Contest once a year since 2015 to find an undiscovered artist to perform in the series. Fantastic Negrito, our first winner, took home a Grammy last year. Gaelynn Lea, winner in 2016, has gone on several international tours, playing venues like Christ Church in Dublin and The Kennedy Center in DC. And our most recent winners, Tank and The Bangas, have taken the world by storm—you can catch them at upcoming music festivals SXSW and Coachella!

The Tiny Desk Contest for 2018 is now open! We'll be open for submissions until March 25 at 11:59pm ET, and I wanted to see if anyone here was interested in entering. The contest is open to all unsigned musicians of all genres from all over the states. Following the concert, the winner will go on a U.S. tour with NPR Music and Lagunitas Brewing Company.

Here's how you enter:
* Make a new video of you or your band performing an original song behind a desk of your choosing (we also accept desk-like surfaces — get creative)!
* Upload it to YouTube and fill out the entry form at npr.org/tinydeskcontest before it closes at 11:59pm ET on March 25!

There are just a few requirements:
* Since this is about undiscovered talent, you can't have a current recording contract.
* You must be at least 21 years old and a U.S. resident.
* Read the official rules here or take our rules quiz—it's less of a quiz and more of a checklist, so take it to make sure your video is eligible to win.

Every year, we have one winner. But this Contest is about much more than that. It's about building a community of musicians across the states, and shining a light, even on the musicians who don't win by showcasing their videos in our newsletter and even on All Songs Considered. Even some entrants who didn't win have ended up at the Tiny Desk – just ask River Whyless, Valley Queen and Deqn Sue. We'd love for you all to join us this year.

If you have any questions, you can comment here or email us. We also have a Facebook group for members of the Tiny Desk Contest community, a space for artists and fans of the Contest to connect with and inspire each other.

Don't post your videos here — if you submit them through the Tiny Desk Contest site, we'll watch them all. Literally, every single one. Thanks so much, and happy music-making!

Reginald Graham, the arresting officer and key witness in Meek Mill's 2007 case, put on list of cops who cannot be used as witnesses by The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office

Posted: 06 Mar 2018 03:07 PM PST

Meek was granted appeal last month based on this guy lying on the stand.

Philly.com article about the list

Officer Reginald Graham

Date of misconduct: Nov. 1, 2013

Summary of facts: Graham "investigated by federal authorities for several alleged acts of corruption."

Finding by Police Board of Inquiry/Arrest: Retired before his hearing.

Penalty: N/A

Note: Graham's testimony was central to the arrest of Meek Mill more than a decade ago — a case that has since landed the rapper back in prison due to probation violations. Mill's attorneys recently filed a motion accusing Graham of lying under oath to secure Mill's arrest.

Meek's lawyers statement

"The release of the so-called "Do Not Testify" list – which includes Meek's arresting officer, Reginald Graham – supports everything in the motions filed by Meek and others wrongfully arrested by Officer Graham for post-conviction relief. We are hopeful that this is the final step in the process to get Meek and the other defendants released on bail and to have their convictions overturned."

Here's what Meek has said in the past about the arrest/conviction:

Lips swollen .... Stitches in both swollen eyes! One of my braids ripped out! I weighed about 130 at the time And I was found guilty of assaulting cops! It's clear 2 see I was punched and stomped by a few cops! If I wasn't blessed the way I am I still would have hatred in my heart towards cops but I forgave bcuz I know all cops ain't the same! 2 "black cops" got on the stand and lied and cried about how I chased them down with a gun and tried to kill them! I caught that case at 18 and was stripped of my freedom and taken away from my family 4 times for the same case and still on probation.. 1 step away from jail if I make one mistake! I can't blame my judge because the law labels cops as "expert witnesses" and it was cops against a black kid and she's suppose to believe a cops testimony first!!

This is my police report they actually charged me with assault because the cop said I injured his hand! But my mugshot clearly says he injured his hand from punching me in my face ....

[Discussion] A Theory - The Hidden Meaning Behind Kendrick Lamar's "BLOOD."

Posted: 06 Mar 2018 07:15 AM PST

EDIT: I just rewatched the youtube video I linked below, where Kendrick is asked about what "BLOOD." means. He skirts around the question for about a minute before he says "It's a new life. It's a new life." Which just happens to be exactly how the woman in "Dying of Thirst" refers to his baptism. She says this is the beginning of a new life, his real life.

This is a cross post from my original post on r/kendricklamar, but I thought it would fit well in this sub too. This is my theory with regards to the title of the song "BLOOD." and how it fits into the themes of the albums DAMN and GKMC, and specifically how it ties into the song "Dying of Thirst." If you're not familiar with these classic fucking albums then I have no idea what you're doing on this sub. There is a TL;DR at the bottom if you don't feel like reading all the details, but I recommend you read the whole thing as there is a lot going on here. I'm not positive this is correct but it seems like there are too many connections for it to be just a coincidence, would love to get some feedback.

Kendrick has been very coy about the song "BLOOD." and it's meaning in interviews. See the 23:01 mark of this interview, where Kendrick is very hesitant to say too much about the meaning of the song, and I don't think anyone has really figured out why the song is called "BLOOD." I haven't seen any theories about the song or the title that I really buy into, but I think I may have stumbled upon some clues in Good Kid, M.a.a.D City (GKMC). Before we go there let's discuss what we know about DAMN.

The album explores the duality of wickedness and weakness, and the choices we make that define who we are. Kendrick has acknowledged the album can be played forwards and backwards to illustrate this duality, and even released an official backwards version of the album. At the end of "DUCKWORTH.", Kendrick explains that if Anthony killed Ducky he might have grown up without a father and died in a gunfight, but instead he is the Kendrick that we know - on top of the rap game and following in the path of God to bring positivity to his community. He emphasizes that it was the choices these men made that allowed him to be where he is today. However, the truly important choice that allowed Kendrick to escape the cycle of violence and despair that have taken so many of his friends and family members in Compton was Kendrick's own choice - a choice that he made as a young man in Compton, during the events of GKMC.

There are a ton of great articles and posts about GKMC, but to make my point I'll try to just skim over the narrative path that Kendrick takes throughout the album as he slowly loses his innocence and strays from God's light.

Although he starts out as a "good kid," the city changes for him (and starts to change him) as he grows from a child to a young black man in Compton. He loses his virginity, rides around with his friends smoking blunts and drinking (which he says he normally wouldn't do, but he succumbs to peer pressure), they jump out of the car and beat up someone wearing different colors, they rob a house and almost get caught, Kendrick gets jumped while trying to find Sherane again, then he and his friends drink it off until they decide to strap up and retaliate. Kendrick's friend Dave dies in the ensuing gunfire, which brings us to the narrative, thematic, and emotional climax of the album, the powerful "Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst."

The article I linked above has a pretty good breakdown on "Sing About Me", but they don't cover "Dying of Thirst" at all, which starts with Kendrick and his friends fleeing from the gunfight, and ends when they encounter an old woman. I'm going to post most of her dialogue here and then discuss it piecemeal in relation to "BLOOD."

Fuck! I'm tired of this shit! I'm tired of fuckin' runnin', I'm tired of this shit! That's my brother, homie!

At the beginning of "BLOOD." Kendrick says he was "taking a walk the other day," when he saw a woman. In this song he and his friends are running from the gun fight when they encounter a woman. She speaks:

Young man, come talk to me! Is that what I think that is? I know that's not what I think that is.

The article linked above (and genius for that matter) assumed that she saw one of the boys with a gun, but why would they be carrying it around openly when they're fleeing a crime scene? Maybe she saw that they had Dave's blood on them or their clothes. Or, if she is a blind woman (I admit this is the one aspect of BLOOD that isn't accounted for in this theory - why is it important that the woman is blind?), maybe she smelled it or sensed it some other way.

In fact, on "Sing About Me," Dave's brother refers to Dave's blood when talking to Kendrick:

As blood spilled on your hands my plans rather vindictive

Later in the track, when Kendrick is addressing himself, he says:

If it's today I hope I hear a Cry out from heaven so loud it can water down a demon With the holy ghost till it drown in the blood of Jesus

So I think there's a fair amount of evidence that it's Blood, and not a gun, that the woman sees on Kendrick and his friends. And then, when she then offers to baptize them and they accept, she has them repeat the sinner's prayer that opens the album:

"Lord God, I come to You a sinner." "And I humbly (ahem) repent for my sins." "I believe that Jesus is Lord." "I believe you raised Him from the dead." "I would ask that Jesus come into my life." "And to be my Lord and Savior." "I receive Jesus to take control of my life." "And that I may live with Him from this day forward." "Thank you, Lord Jesus, for saving me with Your precious blood." (!!!!!!!) "In Jesus name, amen."

They come to her, covered in their friend's blood, literally covered in their sins, and leave having been baptized with the blood of Jesus. It's worth noting that the album starts with the sinner's prayer, further emphasizing its importance to Kendrick.

Now, to tie it all together, I said above that Kendrick made a choice as well. His choice was to accept the baptism (admitting his weakness but vowing to overcome it through God) from the woman, but he could have refused her just as easily, and gone down the wicked path that he started going down throughout GKMC until that point. Why do I think this was the inflection point of Kendrick's life? This choice is the precise point in time DAMN. rewinds to, when Kendrick was "taking a walk the other day" and came across the woman. Not only that, but after the boys recite the sinner's prayer, the woman even explicitly tells Kendrick that this is the start of his new life, his real life. The sinner's prayer is clearly very important to GKMC, as it is recited at both the beginning and narrative climax of the album.

I think "Sing About Me" and "Real" are both very important in this discussion too, but I've already written way too much here, so that's for another post. I have yet to figure out how this theory ties into Section.80, TPAB, untitled, unmastered, or the Black Panther soundtrack…

TL;DR If you go back and read the outro skit of "Dying of Thirst," you'll see many hints that "BLOOD." picks up where "Dying of Thirst" ends, and Booker Kendrick either chooses to accept the baptism from the woman and experiences the DAMN. version of the album, or he chooses not to accept the holy water (referred to as "the Blood of Jesus") and goes through the NMAD. version, eventually dying in a gunfight as he alludes to at the end of DUCKWORTH. Since his choice to be baptized determines whether he lives a life of redemption or wickedness, he essentially copied the story of Bioshock Infinte, but I'm u/NotKenLevine so I'm not going to sue him for it.
