The History of 'That' I Got 5 On It Beat

"That beat" (or melody) is a classic. So I decided to do some research into its history using Genius, WhoSampled, YouTube, and, of course, Wikipedia, to make sure everybody here knows the true origin of this beat, so hopefully somebody reading this learns something they never knew before.

It started when a friend of mine hopped in my car, grabbed the AUX, and started playing Busta Rhymes' Hello featuring Chance the Rapper, and I had that moment we've all had of "I've heard this beat before!" 'That' beat being Luniz's classic I Got 5 On It that features Michael Marshall singing that classic hook.

Everybody knows the "I Got 5 On It" beat, and it's been used by myriad artists, from Puff Daddy, Meek Mill, and Big Sean to Yo Gotti, Lecrae, and Kid Ink. Point is, it's been sampled or otherwise interpolated and replayed in so many songs, everybody knows Tone Capone's beat.

However, not everybody knows that it isn't Tone Capone's beat. While 1995 might seem like a long enough time already to assume that Luniz's biggest hit is the original beat, "I Got 5 On It" actually samples an even older song, Why You Treat Me So Bad by a group called Club Nouveau, going all the way back to 1986. Luniz actually gives Nouveau the sample credit for that beat, with producer credits going to a man named Jay King. And while a person with less free time may be content to settle and say "Jay King got the beat," I am not that person.

Club Nouveau's song isn't the bottom of the rabbit hole. "Why You Treat Me So Bad" actually goes ahead and uses a beat from Jay King's former group, a band called Timex Social Club.

The true origin of the beat is Timex Social Club's 1986 song Thinkin' About Ya, a secondary single off of their first and only album titled "Vicious Rumors." In fact, the song is so obscure, it doesn't even have it's own Wikipedia page or Music Video, being overshadowed by the other singles off the album, "Rumors" and "Mixed Up World."

By the time I reached this point, paranoia hit me and said "there's no way this is the end," but alas, "Thinkin' About Ya" is the end of the line as far as Wikipedia, Genius, and WhoSampled are all concerned.

And to tie it all together in a spooky, perhaps intentional, twist:

"I Got 5 On It" has its hook sung by Michael Marshall, a singer/producer from the 80's.

Michael Marshall was also the lead singer and producer on "Thinkin' About Ya." The story goes that Michael Marshall and Jay King were a part of Timex Social Club together, releasing "Thinkin' About Ya" first. Unfortunately, a beef caused Jay King to disband the group and form a new group called Club Nouveau, which released "Why You Treat Me So Bad" later that same year. As of 2014, Michael Marshall claims that Luniz heard Club Nouveau's song first and therefore gave them the sample credit but still asked him to sing the hook on "I Got 5 On It," which pleased him because, according to him, the beat was originally his.

Therefore, 'That Beat' from "I Got 5 On It" by Tone Capone is not Luniz's beat. 'That Beat' is from the 1986 sleeper hit "Thinkin' About Ya" by Timex Social Club, sang and produced by Michael Marshall, the same man who was asked to sing the hook on "I Got 5 On It."

Poetic Justice, in a way, but it would be even more just if we would give credit where credit is due, and not simply give it to whichever song or artist is most popular.

Next time somebody says "I love that 'I Got 5 On It' beat," let them know. Go spread the word.

My Guide to Chance The Rapper's 10 Day

I've been thinking about writing this since the Grammys as a massive Chance fan, and I had a shit day so I figured it'd be a good way to get happy.

A lot of people are familiar with Chance's work in Coloring Book and Acid Rap, both phenomenal mixtapes from Chance's discography drawing influence from juke, trap, gospel, Dilla, and soul. I think 10 Day is kind of overlooked when discussion of Chance comes up in 2017. This mixtape was written and recorded after Chance's marijuana suspension in his senior year of high school in 2011, and is the most traditional hip-hop that Chance has put out. The tape is sort of self-deprecating throughout, and is more representative of the misguided teen Chance than the "put-together adult" Chance that we've seen now.

14,400 Minutes

Chance's strength has always been in the intros of his tapes. This is no different, with the melodic horns and "igh" adlibs. The titular 14,400 minutes is the 10 days of his suspension. This track sets the theme out in front of you with the first bars:

I got suspended, ooohh you got suspended, For chiefin' a hunnid blunts, 14,400 minutes

Chance is recounting his experience with the school system of graduating late, and being labeled a misfit or "retarded" in Jones College Prep, his high school. The hook of the song reiterates what Chance has been told by the adults in his life:

Ooohh you got suspended, ooohh you not gon' finish

But Chance also brings up violence in Chicago early on, describing how his friend was killed in front of him. The song is a clear path to Chance's future work in 10 day and his later tapes. I'd liken this most to Smoke Again off Acid Rap.

Nostalgia

After the ambitious opening to the album, Chance follows this up with this mixtape's Summer Friends, Nostalgia. Chance is simply rapping about his childhood in Chi-town, talking about the Nickelodeon orange VHS tapes that we grew up with, as well as describing the frequent deaths of his childhood friends. Chance is longing for his childhood innocence, and uses really strong images to tell his story, borrowing the hook from Pete Rock and CL Smooth's "Troy". This song is super beautiful and is my favorite off the tape. Chance says at the end of his first verse:

*Round here we lose best friends like every week

I like to think we playin a long game of hide and go seek

And one day maybe I'ma find Terrance and I could lead them

Kids of the Kingdom singing about freedom*

This is one of my favorite songs to Rap Genius along with, because the annotations and reading the lyrics add so much life to the song.

Fuegometer: 10/10 seriously if this song doesn't make you tear up

Missing You

Chance runs out a song after Nostalgia that is nothing like any of his later discography save All Night, and it's a great change of pace in the tape. His voice distortion creating almost a bitcrushed effect is used to match the grittiness of the bass and loud drums behind him. The first half of this song is almost angry in Chance's tone, as he spits:

*Niggas was busy scrappin', put 'em up

I was too busy rapping, good as fuck*

Holy shit do I love this part of the track. He then brings up his homie dying, and says the most interesting lines compared to 2017 Coloring Book Chano:

*I'm thinking about my nigga he thinking before he die

I'm going to war with fate and I'm going to war with God*

Obviously, Chance is disillusioned with religious beliefs, because God has been unable to help his friends and Chicago citizens from dying from gun violence. Then behind the anger, the soft Rhodes piano chords almost like Kanye's Drive Slow cut into the heavy saws of the track, and Chance delivers a much softer back half of the track, expressing his longing to get his boy Rodney. Chance sings repetitively the three lines:

*I don't know why I sleep with my eyes wide

Hoping that I find you

I'm missing you*

It's a very apt representation of the human emotions after a death and is a touching tribute to Rodney. RIP.

Fuegometer: 8/10

Windows

This song, featuring frequent collaborator Alex Wiley is the first feature on 10 Day, and is also the first track to Chance's relationship with J. Dilla's music. Because of the Dilla influence and chill guitars, I'd liken this song most to Everybody's Something. This is a chill song that is pretty much made for driving in the whip with its hook:

"And I just want to roll with my windows down"

Chance's fuck you attitude towards the education system and wanting to just chill out and party when he says fuck you if I fail, and fuck you if I pass is something a lot of teenagers can relate to from any era. Chance uses references to his favorite spots in Southside like Oak Street, Polk Street, and Michigan Ave.

Fuegometer:7/10

Brain Cells

Hell fucking yes. Druggie Chance comes out to play for the first time in this tape in a way similar to Lost or the first half of Pusha Man Chance goes in on wordplay and internal rhymes and has one of my favorite Chance lines:

"No assignments, book of rhyming and I'm drawing doodles

I should rhyme rhyme with Ramen Noodles*

His delivery is playful, effortless, and almost self-referential. Chano legit rhymed rhyme with ramen noodle. He reflects on how he's too far gone from his drug addictions to be worried about their effects on his health (not true, as we know). Chance makes it known that he wants to be the next big thing:

"But I'ma throw a tantrum 'til I'm on every Samsung

Sanyo and handheld and handgun"

He wants the universal respect of the streets and the radio, which he's close to. His close relationship with almost every major rapper(save Eminem) with a discography consisting tracks that swing as far as Mixtape and Ultralight Beam can give him that reach. Highly recommend this song, as it's Chance's most aspirational song off the tape.

Long Time I and II

Okay, I'm gonna bundle these two up to save myself some time and carpal tunnel. These two are pretty much the same verses, with different production, and I'd most compare this to Cocoa Butter Kisses which is the highest of praise. Chance doubles up also from Beirut's Nantes sample, talking about how he hopes his grandmother's proud now that Chance has made it bigger, while also rapping about how he's failed as a person. My favorite lines:

I'm calling out to God, "You're little angel's falling down Save me from my darkened cloud Reach your hands and arms around

Religious undertones have always existed for Chance in his songs, and this song is no different. Long Time I is loud and brash like Chance bragging about his fame, but Long Time II is a softer, orchestral piece with Donnie Trumpet providing some great melodies for Chance to bring out his reflection more. Both are great songs, but I prefer Long Time II right now.

Fuegometer: 8/10

22 Offs*

This is a really interesting track spit over a Flying Lotus instrumental and is most similar to All We Got in its energy, as Chance uses the rhythm of the syllable "off" to describe his suspension, and he eventually talks about him being a crooked cop towards the end of the track. Cool video too. Also has potentially the funniest line on the tape IMO:

Buying hella bug spray, making sure I get off

Fuegometer: 6.5/10

U Got Me Fucked Up

This is the most braggadocio track off the tape as Chance spits on the hook :

This ain't no game, ain't shit here funny You got me fucked up fucking with my money

You better not mess with Chance's money

This song is most similar to his flow on NaNa but much less abrasive in nature. A lot of quick rhymes in succession for him to ride out on a beat and rap about his weed and lean, and it's a good song to just vibe to.

Fuegometer: 7/10

Family

This Summer Friends-esque track starts out really strong, with Chicago MC Vic Mensa dropping a verse to open the track, and Chance's hook on this is one of my favorites:

Let's land in the land where the Famo stay Grind all day til the fam okay It still warm my heart to hear my grandma pray For the fam of my friends when my mans go away

Chance and Drake are buddies now but Lil Chano throws some MAJOR shade and shouts out Chicago blog Fake Shore Drive

Sing all you want, just don't Drake on they ass Shore you got drive, don't turn fake on they ass

Also Chance is a fucking psychic for this one:

*Will get at you, come get at you

Wanna break ya off, Come Kit-Kat you*

Sulaiman ends it strong in what is probably the most recognizable track on here. Great song fammo. Pretty nostalgic and catchy, the hook will be stuck with you for a few days.

Juke Juke

I'm gonna be honest this is probably my least favorite track, which is not a comment that I hate it, just that I'm hitting the end of a long ass review. Most Chicago track on the tape, as evidenced by the title, and is a happy song from Chance. Most similar to Good Ass Outro which borrows from the song's breakdown.

Fuegometer: 5/10

Fuck You Talm Bout

Chance pops off in this trap influenced track as he talks about the higher ups in his school shutting him down and berating him when he signed out on the sheet. The repetitive chorus is reminiscent of Pusha Man and the song Feefo Voice bumps in the whip.

Favorite Lines:

*fuck this whole school and everything you tahm 'bout

Don't ask me for no I.D., bitch I fucking signed out*

Fuegometer: 7/10

Prom Night

Many people's favorite track on this tape. The song is about Chance missing his Prom Night because of his suspension, and calls me back to Kanye's Runaway I love this song, point blank. Best bars:

*Chance Bennett, a peculiar name

Graduation night teachers Ferris Bueller'd my name

You made a mixtape? Good job, I hope you get a good job*

Yo Vic, remember when they called us some freshmen niggas rapping? Now I ain't gonna be a freshman and I'm rapping

Hey Ma

Oddly, kind of Chance's Hey Mama He wants his mom to Stunt on These Hoes (r/donaldglover yall are some real ones) and is a really nice tribute. Good way to close out the tape, and I just wrote like 2000 words I'm out.

Overall, this is an 8.5/10 and listening to Chance's work you get a great sense of purpose and progression from one album to the next. I hope y'all have a blessed day and fall in love with this tape the way I did.

A-Wax is a Piru who got his start in Pittsburg, CA in 2001. He began rapping after being released from Walla Walla State Penitentiary after serving a 5 year stint for manslaughter. He got his start releasing 'Savage Timez' which ended up being a very popular underground album in Northern California. The late Norte rapper Woodie recognized him, and eventually they released a collaborative album called 2 Sides of the Game. It didn't take long until A-Wax became heavily involved in local beefs. Most famously is his one with Mob Figaz and their producer Rob-Lo. It got started with A-Wax accused Husalah of being a snitch as he suspected of him for being responsible for some his people being locked up. A while back A-Wax ended up kidnapping Rob-Lo and forcing him to produce for him for 3 days and nights. He also has recently had beef with Joe Blow and ended up recording him driving away from him when confronted.. He also posted himself slapping the shit outta Rob-Lo. Husalah also ended up getting jumped at X-Fest by some of Wax people. Check Cindarella Story, one of his better diss tracks.

The most recent beef A-Wax has involved himself in is with Mozzy. A-Wax signed Lavish D to his label, a guy who has been funking with Mozzy for years now leading to a few bodies and Lav ending up in prison where he currently remains. So no surprise there's some tension between Wax & Mozzy.

What you get with A-Wax is convincing lyrics. He's one of those guys you can really believe did what he raps about. His sound from the last 4 years or so took a fairly drastic change from his earlier work. Right now the best way to put it is he can sound like Chinx Drugz with better lyrics rapping with California slang over beats which clearly draw influence from the Atlanta scene. Although most of his beats do not credit any producers the ones I do know he frequently works with is 808 Mafia. This is no surprise if you're familiar with Bricksquad. A-Wax has been collaborating with them for years. He even has a collaborative album with Wooh Da Kid, Frenchie and Bakery Brad called Nightmare Gang as well as a collaborative album with YG Hootie. In fact both Frenchie and Wooh Da Kid are now signed to A-Wax's label Pie-RX. A-Wax is a very prolific artist, often releasing several albums a year. Pushin' Keyz was his second project in 2016 after he released Hustlas Convention hosted project as the top of the year.

If you're at all into bay area music you'll likely know some of his music as he has worked with such staples as The Jacka, J-Diggs, Baby Bash, Sean T, B-Dawg, Woodie, Lil Ric, Keak Da Sneak, Messy Marv, Jay Tee, Cellski, Mistah FAB, Rydah J Klyde, Killa Tay, Richie Rich, Turf Talk, E-40, Brotha Lynch Hung, Philthy Rich & Too $hort.

The album Pushin' Keyz main consistencies are the verses and beats. A-Wax is one of the few artists who can have such a great presence and flow using autotune while also delivering great lyrics. That said heavy use of autotune is fairly limited to a few songs.

Review

The strength that A-Wax has in his music comes from the emotion he pours into his music. You can always see he means what he says because that's all he raps about; his life. The most consistent theme he has is the lack of trust he has for anybody around him. Although you might not relate directly to the situations he raps about he still comes off as very relatable. I would not call his music dark, but it most certainly is not uplifting. One of his most frequent themes is drug use to mask the pain in his life. He's not much of a storyteller but you still come out of his music feeling like you know a lot about his life through the themes of his music.

This album is a thematic sequel to his 2014 album Pullin' Strings. Just as Pullin' Strings featured a string heavy focus on production, Pushin' Keyz main theme is piano. This is especially apparent on the short interludes that are after each song. In these clips you can hear A-Wax and others talking somewhat indecipherably. They don't take away from the album though and sometimes are quite nice transitions into the following track. In one clip you can hear someone being choked and gasping for breathe while someone tells the guy to stop, this is rumoured to be Rob-Lo getting choked out. The piano melodies are much more simple than you would expect from something like a Zaytoven anthem.

The rappers Wax works with here are from his Pie-RX label like Frenchie (former Bricksquad artist) and E Bang (San Francisco rapper) as well as artists affiliated with Chief Keef like Boss Top and the more unknown Vidal Garcia & Thola. There is not an artist on here who disappoints, they all manage to drop verses better than they typically do on their own projects.

The most impressive part about the most recent run of albums by A-Wax has been that it seems like he is still changing and being able to create a fresh sound. He's nearing 40 years old, and has been rapping for over 15 years, but his style and consistency is arguably at its best. Although never able to ever crack into the mainstream, A-Wax has really solidified a great career as an underground California rapper.

Young Thug did NOT open for Drake for his first of 2 Dublin dates last night. Despite advertising meet and greets for the 2 dates and multiple shows after. His official facebook still lists the events and gave the opportunity to buy meet and greet tickets for both shows via the site http://youngthugtours.com/

I haven't spotted any official announcement in relation to this so just said i would warn anyone who like myself was heavily influenced to see Drake again based on Young Thug being one of the opening acts.
