Rappers to Watch From Every State in 2017 #3 - TX, VA, TN, OR, OH

Posted: 17 Dec 2016 11:04 AM PST

What is up errybody, as usual, give love to who you feel. Feel free to discuss these people and show love to the artists.

Other Write-Ups:

Who: Khalid

SoundCloud

Age: 18

Location: El Paso, Texas

Recent Projects: Khalid (2016)

Songs to Check Out:

There's really not much I can say about Khalid without sounding like a gushing fanboy, so this will probably be one of the shorter write ups. To start with, Khalid is definitely not a rapper, he's an R&B artist, and a damn good one at that. His voice is phenomenal, and his music really shows it off. He has a very haunting quality, best displayed in his acoustic cover of Frank Ocean's "Lost".

This haunting quality is seen again, but in lesser amounts, in his breakout song "Location". However, Khalid also makes much more animated songs, such as his recent release "Hopeless". Khalid has not only range in his voice, but in the style of the music he makes. Which makes a lot of sense, as /u/WackaFlockaGeese astutely points out, he picks really simple beats that let him shape the music to his voice. Much like deM Atlas, it offers him way more in the options of creativity, and it makes it so the song naturally follows the flow of his voice, rather than having to battle out the fight many artists have between the beat and their voice. However, it also means that Khalid's music is often strikingly simple, lacking a lot of complexity that the most successful R&B artists have.

Khalid is certainly on his way to huge things, as if the 17 million streams on "Location" wasn't enough of a sneak peak into that. As he continues to develop – which he will, considering he's only 18 – expect him to be a household name. He's a great artist and is perfect for y'all corny ass dudes who like to sing along and pretend like you don't sound like those yelling goats. Give him a look, he's definitely going to be blowing up in the new year.

Who: Chaz French

SoundCloud

Age: 24

Location: Washington D.C. (Sorry Virginia, this you)

Recent Projects: These Things Take Time (2015)

Songs to Check Out:

Chaz French reminds me a lot of what I'd expect Bryson Tiller's music to sound like if he rapped. He's another artist who has heavy R&B roots, but French actually does a lot of rapping as well, which puts him in that weird Drake cloud of music. What separates Chaz from this group, besides improving with each project he puts out, is his range. He offers up a lot in his newest project, These Things Take Time, although he made it pay to listen on SoundCloud which is the ultimate sign of headassery. His song "Questions" is definitely a lot more bassy than a song like "Ready".

Chaz definitely has a lot of radio appeal and I can see him moving on up in 2017. He already has music with Wale, has been on Hot97 and has had articles written on him on Vibe and Billboard. He, like Sincerely Collins, have been homeless due to trying to chase their dream of rapping on a big stage, and it shows in Chaz's work ethic and the level that he produces at. It's rare to find a weak piece from him; when I was going through his discography I noticed there were some songs I liked and some I didn't, but the quality of all of the songs in terms of production and mixing quality was superb.

Chaz follows a timeline similar to Sincerely Collins, where his project Happy Belated (2015) is much more raw, and These Things Take Time is much more accessible to the normal listener. I'd recommend starting with TTTT and then working backwards, especially if you liked some of Drake's more recent projects. It doesn't look like he's dropped anything since his most recent project, but his instagram hints to new music coming soon, so be on the lookout for moves to be made.

Who: Mike Floss

SoundCloud

Age: 25

Location: Nashville, TN

Recent Projects: Don't Blame the Youth (2015)

Songs to Check Out:

It was hard to keep myself away from doing Blac Youngsta for Tennessee, but I ended up going with Mike Floss instead. Mike Floss is a complex artist. The street influence is clear in his music, especially in his most recent project Don't Blame the Youth. I'm not going to go as far as to say he's a political rapper or a conscious rapper, but he's not afraid to rap about the social issues he sees. He also doesn't ignore the entertainment side of rap (see "Holy Ghost"), and won't shy away from beats that I've definitely heard Chainsmokers make music over (also see "Holy Ghosts"). He just makes good music, regardless of the message; makes sense for the son of highly regarded jazz musician Rod McGaha.

I would say that the majority of his music sees heavy southern influence. A little of trap here and there, a little positive vibe, and even some of the classic boom bap beats all combine to make a sound of his own in a city known more for guitars than bars. He's a pretty complete artist, he shows an ability to make hard songs on "Dopeboy Dreaming", make more R&B songs on "Holy Ghost", and make grimier songs on "Kerosene". Floss is another rapper who doesn't really fit into a mold that was set before him; he's his own artist, which bodes well for a guy trying to lead a scene in his city.

Mike Floss's vision goes past just him getting big. He wants to do something with his image, he's socially aware and involved, and wants to make a change for the better in his city. He's got a good bit of support from the Music City, and I could see him carrying that onto a bigger stage. He's already helped with music for advertising Tidal, opened for Waka, and signed with ColdCutsRecords. Just give it time, he's another artist I could see start making appearances on some bigger music festivals soon.

You can read my interview with Mike and what building his career in a city known for rock and country has been like below.

My Interview with Mike Floss

Who: Aminé

SoundCloud

Age: 22

Location: Portland, Oregon

Recent Projects: Calling Brio (2015)

Songs to Check Out:

Amine is easily the biggest artist on this list, mostly due to the fact that Reo Cragun decided to wipe his soundcloud and is taking his sweet ass time releasing a new project to repopulate (keep an eye on him though, he's bout to blow too). But also in no small part to his overall talent, and the fact that he already hit major mainstream success this summer with "Caroline". Currently sitting on over 90 million streams Spotify and currently getting hit with major references on white people twitter, and with a live performance on Jimmy Fallon, the dude is definitely not slouching on reaching nationwide popularity. So why is he here? Well, take a look at Dave B and you'll see, these guys truly make up the Northwest sound.

Amine uses reggae and jazzy vibes seen in other northwestern artists, which mixes well with the overall positive vibe that the area seems to be promoting. Metal drums, clapping, and funky beats are consistent. His rapping style is also reminiscent of Chance The Rapper almost. Every word is it's own word, he likes to mix a little bit elongated, almost singing words into his song to start or end lines, and he raps with the same excitement as the beats he uses. People who enjoy Chance The Rapper will really appreciate what Amine is creating. This explains "Caroline" blowing up alongside Chance 3 this summer. He creates music that's fun to dance and rap along with, it is as simple as that.

Like I already said, Amine has already tasted commercial success and has been shown the spotlight. I wouldn't expect him to leave anytime soon. He's got an infectious feeling that comes with his moving that gets people moving and smiling. You'll see his name around a lot, and it's pronounced "uh-mean-aye".

Who: Correy Parks

SoundCloud

Age: 27

Location: Columbus, Ohio

Recent Projects: The Road Less Traveled (2016)

Songs to Check Out:

Parks isn't Ohio's biggest rapper out right now but he may be their best. I don't have a good comparison for Correy because he truly is his own entity, and it seems like just about everything he touches is phenomenal. He's flexible; you'll see him flowing with a lighter beat like on "Vibe" and then turn around and kill a grimier beat like on "Rollin". He can even nail an R&B song like on "Social Networth" and not make me feel like a little bitch for listening to it. The dude has it all.

This flexibility makes it really difficult to describe Correy, but he does have some general common trends. You can tell a funk influence on a lot of beats he picks, there's some synth sounds mixed with almost a trap-like beat on most songs that contributes to the unique sound. His music as a whole is generally really well mixed, which is something I really wish I had run into more when doing this write-up. Whether it's the ethereal type sounds he does on his newest "What A Life" Ft. Nana B, or the more "Golden Age of Rap" type beats he does on "Payday", the song just sounds good. Production really never comes up shorts, and the lyrics never really get corny. There's not much at all to complain about, but there's a lot to get excited about.

While, for many artists, the last paragraph on the write-up has been for me to try to voice my opinion as a sort of Nostradamus of up and coming rappers, but I can't hazard a guess for Correy. The dude has potential to make huge waves, especially with the rise of artists like Anderson Paak recently, and I don't want to limit my prediction, because he has the skillset to break it. I really can't speak highly enough about this guy, check him out.

Hey guys, I wrote an analysis on what I think is the best track in Dumbfoundead's mixtape, We Might Die (2016): Safe!

Posted: 17 Dec 2016 03:11 PM PST

Safe by Dumbfoundead from We Might Die (2016)

Hello! It's been a while! After a very long hiatus, I've once again put pen to paper and finished an analysis!

Next up: Awaken My Love! by Childish Gambino!

My last article was How A Broken Heart Changed The World, detailing why 808s and Heartbreak is Kanye's most influential album. If you haven't read it yet, please let me know what you think!

Also, if you're interested, I also have a Best Track series that focuses on the best track in an album. I listen to an album and pick my absolute favorite track and do an analysis on it. I did the same with ASAP Rocky's Excuse Me from A.L.L.A, Travis Scott's Pornography from Rodeo, and Kanye West's See You In My Nightmares from 808's and Heartbreak.

I also did a write-up as to why I think Outkast's Ms. Jackson is a perfect song.

Please read through and let me know what you think. I hope you enjoy it!

[DISCUSSION] The Lox - Filthy America...It's beautiful

Posted: 17 Dec 2016 11:14 AM PST

Album been out for 24 plus now and there hasn't been a thread. Their first album in 16 years is exactly what you'd expect from them straight bars. Kiss had a line I can't recall it exactly but where he basically said their the only trio where each guys the strongest and he's really not wrong, obviously kiss and styles are neck and neck talent wise but Sheek has proven time and time he can hold his own and he does on this album. The mobb deep feature was dope, I saw fetty as a feature and was nervous but thankfully he was just on a hook and Gucci was dope. It ain't a long album and it really flew by because it was so good

My favorite tracks, Filthy America, Hard Life, The Family, and secure the bag

Also loved this bar by kiss

" Your honor I already paid my dues to society Allegedly, I sold drugs, huge variety Had to feed the ones I love, that's a priority No matter the verdict, they'll forever be a part of me You would much rather see me laying on the gurney,"

Overall it's a pretty good album from NYC vets, if you like hard bars and dope lyrics you'll fuck with this album

Okay y'all, so it's been a week since this album came out.

How are folks feeling about it? Seems like some were not big fans of it, but on the whole, it renewed some people's faith in Ab-Soul as an MC and musician.

What are favorite parts of the album? What do you feel could have been improved?

Imma leave a couple comments so it don't take up this whole spot at the top of the post.
