Complex's 50 Best Songs of 2016

Posted: 12 Dec 2016 04:55 PM PST

The Internet's keyboardist, Jameel Bruner has left the band.

Posted: 12 Dec 2016 03:36 PM PST

Havent seen a post of this and wasnt sure if i should but I know a good portion of this sub likes the Internet so here goes:

https://twitter.com/Pejondis/status/808001447107313664

So I thought things were weird when I saw their new interview with Pharrell yesterday and Jameel was absent when they introduced themselves. I see their twitter page and they both have their profile & header a picture with only the 5 of them. I checked Jameel's twitter and it seems that he has indeed left the band.

As of now there is still no formal announcement from the band or any of the remaining members and the fact that he was on the FADER cover story (as a member) a few months ago announcing that each member have their solo project going on makes me think that they didn't end on good terms/or Jameel left abruptly.

Also, the guitarist Steve Lacy tweeted this a few days ago:

https://twitter.com/stevelacys/status/806711940953174016

https://twitter.com/stevelacys/status/806712670095220736

The keys on Ego Death was one of my favorite things in the album and this is a shame but hopefully this wouldn't affect their sound in a negative way.

Thoughts?

[SHOTS FIRED] Jazz Cartier vs Sean Leon: An Explainer

Posted: 11 Dec 2016 04:44 PM PST

Sean Leon and Jazz Cartier are both Toronto rappers with somewhat similar styles.

They previously collabed on the song Above the Rim.

Supposedly they were supposed to do a video and promo for this song, but Jazz got salty about Sean's verse being better than his. Plans fell through and nothing really happened with the song.

Afterwards, Sean dissed Cuzzi on his tumblr

And on Twitter

In the meantime, Jazz went on tour with Post Malone and continued doing his thing.

The he dropped 2 tracks. Waste and Pree, both of which can be considered sends for Sean and Jazz's former Get Home Safe Crew.

Sean Leon is also preparing to drop the first part of his highly anticipated triple album Black Sheep Nirvana, titled I Think You've Gone Mad this month.

In anticipation, Sean dropped the track Fav Rapper/Hundred Million Religion today. This is one of the tracks he claims Jazz stole (on Jazz'a New Religion). He transformed the song into a Jazz Cartier diss.

The entire first verse is a send for Jazz.

[Intro: Jazz Cartier + Sean Leon]

Sean Leon is [?]

Is probably one of the stronger

Artists out of Toronto right now

[?] bout it bout it bout boy

[Verse 1]

Ayy

Maui Slim your biggest inspiration why you acting like I ain't your Favourite rapper

You to the type to see me out in public give me daps and love and then be Hating after

I'mma fuck you like your label fucks you a little nigga telling Tall tales

Parkdale with the cartel we bout to break the bricks down in [?]

2 twos you got basic bars you ain't up to par you a Party planner

Black Sheep we don't entertain em, we put em in a grave and Throw a party after

I'mma put the pressure on this nigga I be flexing on him on a Schwarzenegger

Flow slice like a sharp knife or a blade fight I got Swords for niggas

[?] provided by the backwoods smoking back to back all by the back door

Got some hammers planted in a passport in case I have to dash

Fresh prince it was never Jazz Naw never that nigga know

I mean niggas know they get that figure for That shit before

Obviously Sean thought it a big enough diss from Cuzzi to drop a diss track. This is shaping up to be one of the biggest beefs in Toronto since Mo-G & OVO.

Sean also said this on twitter

And Jazz tweeted this quoting Drake's Charged Up.

It's shaping up to be some interesting beef.

Is Jazz a snake? Will he drop a diss track? Will Black Sheep Nirvana be a masterpiece as Sean claims?

Find out next time.

To follow along with what's going.

Childish Gambino's New Album Is A Funky Left Turn

Posted: 11 Dec 2016 03:33 AM PST

This may be the man from 4 Your Eyez Only.

Posted: 11 Dec 2016 01:37 AM PST

Alright, J. Cole's new album 4 Your Eyez Only was mostly from the perspective of his friend who was killed. We know the man is Jermaine's childhood friend, so he's probably the same age as Cole- 31. He'd also be from Cole's home state; North Carolina. He had a daughter around 19/20 - so that kid would be around 11. We know his name is James McMillan.

The following two articles (1) and (2) feature a man who has these credentials, I think it's the man from 4 Your Eyez Only but there's no definite way to guarantee it. What do y'all think?

Best Beats 2.0, Week 20 - 9th Wonder

Posted: 11 Dec 2016 12:37 PM PST

Durham's very own 9th Wonder is this week's best Beats!

Background: Growing up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the boy who would become producer 9th Wonder, Pat Douthit, performed in the school band and also played keyboards at home. Initially, while a student at North Carolina Central University, Douthit planned on saving his money for the producer's favorite tool, the MPC, but after a friend showed him that he could make the beats he wanted on a computer, he decided to use that instead. In 1998 he met classmates and future bandmates Phonte and Big Pooh, and with them soon formed Little Brother. Their first album, The Listening, was released in 2003, and 9th Wonder began to receive further attention after he remixed Nas' 2002 album, God's Son, naming it God's Stepson, as well as the track "Threat," which he produced on Jay-Z's seminal The Black Album. Work with Murs, Buckshot, Jean Grae, Destiny's Child, and Mary J. Blige followed, as well as another Little Brother record, 2005's Minstrel Show, the same year his proper solo debut, Dream Merchant, Vol. 1, came out. In 2007, 9th Wonder left Little Brother and spent his time both producing tracks for the likes of Erykah Badu and Sean Price, and teaching a class on hip-hop at NCCU and collaborating with Boot Camp Clik's Buckshot for an album called The Formula, which was released in the spring of 2008. Two collaborative albums arrived in 2010, with Fornever featuring Murs and Death of a Pop Star featuring David Banner. The proper solo effort The Wonder Years followed in 2011, while the 2012 release, The Solution, teamed the producer with rapper Buckshot. Another collaborative effort with Murs, The Final Adventure, also arrived in 2012, while 2015 was the year he dropped the album Indie 500 with Talib Kweli
