Wiz Khalifa's Kpop Drama

Posted: 03 Dec 2016 10:22 AM PST

tl;dr wiz and an idol take small digs at each other; 3rd party makes it into drama

couple days ago wiz whos no stranger to kpop was supposed to perform at a kpop award show with a singer called taeyeon from girls generation but something happened and taeyeon didnt perform with wiz

taeyeons fans were wondering what happened bc it was one of the hyped collabs of the award show. taeyeon backed out of a collab at the same award show years ago btw

wiz said 'The fact that Teyeon backed out of our performance caught me off guard too but never accept rejection as failure.' and taeyeon said the collab didnt happen due to technical issues this awards show is known for. the dj wiz brought retweeted both sides yesterday making it seem like the issue was a misunderstanding like everyone already assumed

the issue was blowing over until wiz and the dj started tweeting this morning

dj bonics said 'We didn't say a bad word about her: we flew 15 hours and came a day early to rehearse and she said "she went back to hotel"' which made taeyeons fans wonder what the truth was bc wiz said she went to the hospital. taeyeon took this to her instagram story saying 'I didn't go to the hospital, buddy.. I waited for you and could only wash up now'. a misunderstanding is what most kpop fans chalked it up too but bonics changed his story claiming he never said she went to her hotel and said a producer cancelled the stage bc wiz is too tall so its becoming a big issue in kpop

there you have it. wiz khalifas kpop scandal

kpop fans are overreacting as usual

For those not in the know, TM88 and PND were rumored to have been beefing after their highly anticipated "Party At 8" mixtape was scrapped for unknown reasons. A couple days ago, TM88 posted a tweet asking people to facetime his number, and with that, TM88 also replied to my text and announced that he has work with PND on the way.

Rappers to Watch From Every State in 2017 #1 - AL, AK, AZ, WI, MA

Posted: 02 Dec 2016 09:51 AM PST

What the fuck is up y'all, here to celebrate being done with classes for the semester and the start of the weekend. You may have seen me posting in the discussion threads about doing these write-ups. I'll be posting them in groups of 5 every week for 10 weeks. If you guys have recommendations from artists from your state, feel free to post them.

A lot of these guys were cool enough to do interviews, and I'll be sending them a link to the posts so they can interact with the community if they want. Be sure to show them some love if you're feeling 'em.

Who: The Green Seed (R-Tist, C.O.M.P.L.E.T., DJFX, DJ Jeff C)

Age: Late 30s

Location: Birmingham, Alabama

Recent Projects: Drapetomania (2014)

Songs to check out:

While it would be easy for me to say that The Green Seed is the group for fans of the backpack rap greats and oldheads alike, the truth is, they just makes timeless music. Based out of Birmingham, they could easily be at place performing with A Tribe Called Quest just as much as Outkast or Cunninglynguists. That's not to say that this group doesn't have their own sound, combining an east-coast style of rap with their southern roots to make music where it is often hard to real complaints.

To expand on this, they are an incredibly refreshing group to listen to. They especially excel in the more mellow style of rap, often sampling soulful singing with slow, intentional lyrics to create very thoughtful tracks. They produce on a longer schedule do they can make sure to cover any loose ends, and it shows. One of the common things I saw when going through their music was that, while some people didn't love TGS, I couldn't really find anyone with specific faults with their music, and while rap purists may find a special place in their heart for The Green Seed, anyone can enjoy the great chemistry they have together.

The Green Seed is a little older than most of the other rappers included in this list, which one might guess from the sound of some of their songs. R-tist, the lead emcee and producer for the group said that this is soon to change. In the interview I had with him, he went on to detail the group's influences, the direction they look to take, and what trying to make music and living and Birmingham is like for them. You can listen to the interview in the link below.

Interview with The Green Seed's R-Tist

Who: Keezy from Sky Division

Age: 23

Location: Anchorage, Alaska/Seattle, Washington

Recent Projects: Scorpio (2016)

Songs to check out:

Hailing originally from Anchorage, Alaska, Keezy is working to be the first from Alaska to do it big. His drive is clear, with a big portfolio and a wild diverse song selection, Keezy shows that he is capable of creating any type of music. While his collaborative album with Sk8God, Departure To, is arguably his most complete work, Keezy shows he can continually string together strong songs to produce tapes like Houston style Burn-Notice or his recent R&B rooted release Scorpio.

Anyone who has seen 907's Own should have seen Keezy's thirst for success coming, where he talks about how he'd be willing to literally go for broke to achieve his dreams. Along the way he's picked up skills as a solid producer, continued to sharpen his lyricism, and created a rap group, Sky Division. He recently moved to the Seattle area to try to grow his brand and improve his music, and his recent experimentation with different sounds attests to that.

One of the most notable things about Keezy is how flexible he is and how productive of a feature he is on songs. Take the song Very True ft. Zay Wonder, who is actually his cousin (and nice with it, look for a shout-out his way in the Washington write-up), where Keezy shows how he can flip his current style to fit any beat or rapper thrown his way. Expect big things from Keezy as he continues to grow and develop his style.

In my interview with Keezy, he told me more about where he expects to go to, what being an aspiring rapper in Alaska is like, and his experience in founding his rap group Sky Division. You can read about it below.

Interview with Keezy

Who: Sincerely Collins

Age: 26

Location: Phoenix, Arizona/ Los Angeles, California

Recent Projects: The Legend of the Phoenix (2016)

Songs to Check Out:

Sincerely Collins has already established his name as a rapper to watch in the southwest. Comfortable in his message, Collins seems to be able to unconsciously produce consistent, high quality work. From his hungry sound in Destroyer to his hopeful lyrics over production reminiscent of Kanye's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy on his most recent album The Legend of the Phoenix, Collins shows why he deserves the recognition he has gotten.

Listening to Sincerely's discography shows that he is an excellent producer; his use of pianos and soulful vocals create beautiful songs. In The Legend of the Phoenix, his production mixes well with his candid and personal autobiography to make listening to his music an experience rather than just an action. His execution is very well thought out, to the point where you could determine the tone and general content of a song strictly off of the instrumentals.

The best part about Collins' work is that every song is unique; he doesn't allow any track to be forgettable. His memorable style, superb production, and thoughtful messages all play into what is ultimately a great portfolio of work. Collins spoke on his message and inspiration, the process of moving up in the rap business, and what his success means to him in the interview below.

Interview with Sincerely Collins

Who: Trapo

Age: 18

Location: Madison, Wisconsin

Recent Projects: ShadeTrees (2016)

She (2016)

Songs to Check out:

Trapo is already rapidly gaining exposure on the national level, and for good reason. He's a master of vocal quality and brings that skill to every song he's on. Rapping with a grimy, deep voice, he'll surprise listeners with how smooth he sounds over his experimental beats. His sound has matured vastly in She from where it was a year ago in Black Beverly Hills, and he'll be sure to improve again with his impending release of his new tape ShadeTrees.

One of the things Trapo does best, as mentioned in /u/WakeFlockaGeese's post, is switch between rapping and singing so effortlessly. In a new loosie of his, "Say it if you mean it", he essentially lives in that state between singing and rapping and does it effortlessly. Nothing seems forced for him, and he uses his voice to convey his real emotion and tone on the song in a way that his production and lyrics couldn't. That's not to say that his production or lyricism is poor, but that his vocal control adds a depth to his already impressive music to create a special quality that isn't easily captured otherwise.

Trapo's music is more on the experimental side of things, using a lot of noise and reverb for an added grittiness to his music, often contrasting with ethereal sounding backing, again seen in his piece "Say it if you mean it". One thing listeners can be sure of, however, is that he's going to sell out on every song. Going back to the vocal quality aspect, he's able to control how he sounds on a beat so well, able to pack a serious punch on songs where it needs it, and able to dial it back when necessary. Take another loose song recently released from Trapo, Average Freestyle, and compare it to his recent single, Beg ft. Skizzy Mars. He commands a presence on his songs that they require, and will never leave anybody disappointed with his presence on a song.

In the interview I had with Trapo we talked about Mick Jenkins, his thoughts on the current state of the rap game, and his upcoming tours (NYC, Chicago, and Madison, you're up). Listen to the interview below.

Interview with Trapo

Who: Michael Christmas

Age: 21/22

Location: Boston, Massachusetts

Recent Projects: Fudge (Collab with Prefuse 73) (2016)

Songs to Check out:

Michael Christmas is pretty much if Malcolm from Dope grew up and made music. Rhymes about watching Empire on Netflix or eating hot pockets over upbeat production, it seems like Christmas wasn't too far off when he said he feels like Michael Cera. He's often lauded as being sort of an "everyman rapper", talking about everyday problems and relatable issues, but manages to do so while also not reaching the comedy rap corniness of Lil Dicky.

Christmas shows a lot of flexibility in his range, but at the same time shows that he still has a little bit more development to do to find his own sound. The ride through his discography is worth the disconnects between subgenres however, as he continues to perform well through many different styles. One thing that seems to live on throughout his works is the evidence of growing up in the 90s; you'll never be far from digital sounds or video game OST samples and lyrical references to that decade when listening.

To sum up Michael Christmas would be a difficult task just due to the amount of experimenting he is still doing with his own music, so it is really best to just give him a shot. He is already doing great in his hometown of Boston and seems to be looking at potential national recognition, with this post being one of many recognizing him as a national up and comer. It couldn't happen to a more likeable guy either.

Thanks to everyone who helped out. Like I said, show these guys some love if you like the shit you see. If y'all got any questions, comments, or concerns about the project or anything let me know.

[FIRST IMPRESSIONS] Smoke DZA & Pete Rock - Don't Smoke Rock

Posted: 02 Dec 2016 10:24 AM PST

Since it's been out for 23-24 hours I thought I'd ask for people's first impressions.

Personally, the album is as good as it gets. After hearing it multiple times it's my favourite Smoke DZA project and Pete Rock done an INCREDIBLE job on the production side of things.

With features like Dave East, Royce, Cam'Ron (that track surpassed my expectations and then some), Mac Miller, Big K.R.I.T. and many others, it's a stacked lineup produced by obviously one of the best to ever do it.

My favourite track has to "Milestone" featuring Jadakiss, Styles P and BJ The Chicago Kid (who murders that hook) and Jadakiss' 16 bars has one of the best rhyme schemes of the year IMO.

You gettin' pimped now look at you the new rap hoe
If I touch it then I take it to a new plateau
Success is a process, gotta do that slow
Before I blew, all a nigga knew was move that blow
Write a verse everyday and just pursue that flow
Without the risk the reward is just do that show
Cream on top of the cream, call it Dough a la mode
Left the drugs in the hood took my show on the road
Figured they ain't never been nowhere I show 'em the road
Some of them forgot the roles had to show em the code
Then I started heating up, had to show 'em the cold
Cause they ain't wanna man up, had to go on his own
Slugs will crack your skull then they go in your dome
Couple Psalms from the bible they go in a poem, yeah
Hard plastic or even a wild chrome
Ain't nothing stopping me from my milestone"

After 4-5 listens I'd give it a 9/10 but that rating might change. Every track seems to have replay value so it could stay the same.
