2016 Hip-Hop Ultimate Rate

Posted: 10 Mar 2022 10:36 AM PST

Hello r/hiphopheads! I hope you all have recovered from the Slaughter of Jay-z (and honestly Drake as well) in our last rate, and are ready for a whole new rate. Welcome to the 2016 Ultimate!

Let's just say that 2016 was an interesting time….at least in the United States. The gloss of the Obama Administration was seemingly fading away, and despite a booming economy and relative social stability there was a sense of upheaval that was going on. These albums here really portray this shift that many were feeling at the dismay of the world and shift away from the standard power structures. With all these albums the subject of them is the artist themselves; each exploring their place in the ever changing world. These albums are just a small sample of the greatness that 2016 was in music, and portray 2016 as not just a defining year for music, but a defining year for culture in general.

A Tribe Called Quest - We Got it from Here…..Thank You for your Service

Spotify | Apple Music | Tidal | Youtube

While many acts make an album that feels like a "last hurrah", "We Got it From here" really feels like a closing chapter on one of the most influential early hip hop acts. While a pair of performances in 2013 on the Yeezus tour were touted as their last, a special performance on Jimmy Fallon in honor of the 25th anniversary of their first album ignited a spark for them. They decided to come together and make new music for the first time in nearly two decades. Unfortunately shortly after getting back together, original member Phife Dawg passed away from complications of Diabetes. This lit the fire even more for the remaining members to finish this project. While many phone-in a reunion for a paycheck, A Tribe Called Quest released one of the most critically and commercially successful albums of their career. Released just days after the polarizing 2016 election, It seemed like a voice of reason in an era when many Americans were rethinking what it meant to be an "American citizen". It debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200, and scored a 91 on Metacritic. Is this album still one of the best hip-hop albums of the past decade, or was the hype of their return and a good release date make this more of a "flash in the pan" type hype.

Danny Brown - Atrocity Exhibition

Spotify | Apple Music | Tidal | Youtube

By 2016, Detroit based rapper Danny Brown had felt like "next big thing" for a while. His second album XXX got him noticed by a lot of publications for its unique sound and perspective in the Hip hop genre. This hype brought in a lot more attention for his 2013 follow-up Old; collaborating with "up and coming" artists like Asap Rocky, Purity Ring, and Charli XCX. The album was a moderate commercial success, begging the question of what he would do next of what he would do next. Instead of doing something completely commercial for his last push towards a-list status, he released arguably his most experimental album yet. With Atrocity Exhibition he took inspiration from diverse genre's like electronic music, post-punk, and soul to explore his troubled mental state. The album became an immediate hit from critics who were thrilled with the space Danny Brown had carved for himself in the hip-hop space. The Guardian proclaimed him as "One of contemporary music's greatest pleasures." It was even proclaimed as Anthony Fantano's album of the year, stating "I couldn't put any other album here". Now over 5 years out, was this just smoke and mirrors of fantano's bald head?

Isaiah Rashad - The Sun's Tirade

Spotify | Apple Music | Tidal | Youtube

After being signed to the high-profile Top Dog Entertainment and a Buzz-worthy debut all eyes were on Isaiah for what his follow-up would be. A struggling rapper for years, now that doors in the industry were open for him, Rashad still felt struggles with his mental health. With The Sun's Tirade takes an unexpectedly introspective approach as he explores familial traumas and his recent struggles with addiction. He played into his southern rap roots of trap beats with elements of neo-soul to capture the personal nature of the project. Critics were impressed by the refined nature of the album, as it felt like Rashad had "come of age" as a creative. Despite using other Top Dog talent like SZA and Kendrick Lamar, Tirade truly felt like something only Rashad could do. Though I wonder how the more "vibey" nature of the album will do with the more bombastic albums in this rate.

Kanye West - The Life of Pablo

Spotify | Apple Music | Tidal | Youtube

The chaotic roll out of The Life of Pablo, was the stuff of legends. It appeared that Ye's long streak of being a critical darling and commercially successful rapper were coming to an end. While his public image never really recovered after the 2009 VMA incident, it felt like it was only getting worse in the year prior to Pablo, following a controversial performance at Glastonbury and an 11 minute rant at the VMA's. On top of that, the released version of the album on February 14th sounded unfinished and very scattered, as well as hard to access. While the project was originally intended as a Gospel project, many were confused what the actual focus of the album was. It felt like a "kitchen sink" album with Kanye's random musings and ideas all together in a befuddled mess. It was not until major updates at the end of March in time for its release on Apple and Spotify that many listeners saw clarity in the project; it was Kanye making music about his journey. Despite the confusing narrative of the album as a whole, the songs felt like some of his most accessible in years. While it looked like it would be his downfall, The Life of Pablo only further cemented him as a pop culture icon. But I wonder how Hip Hop Heads will interpret this scattered album.

Rules

READ ALL OF THESE BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR SCORES

  1. Listen to every song from the standard versions of all four of these albums and assign a score to them between 1 and 10. If you're feeling specific, decimals are okay to one place. Do not use any more than that since they'll break the program used to generate results. So a 6.5 is okay, but a 8.25 is not.
  2. You have to listen and score each song on the ballot! If you miss a score, it'll again break the program and your ballot will not be counted, but I will most likely reach out to you if this is the case.
  3. Your scores are not a secret, feel free to discuss them wherever you feel like, whether that's in the thread or in Daily Discussions. I've seen people comment to try to rally people behind their 11s, which I should also explain…
  4. You may give ONE song an 11 and ONE song a 0. Note one 11 and/or 0 in TOTAL, not for each album. Please reserve these for your most favorite and least favorite tracks, excessive sabotage ruins rate results and generally makes things less fun.
  5. You can change you scores at any time— feel free to PM me at any point after submission and before the deadline and I'll update those for you.
  6. As mentioned, the program used to calculate results uses a specific format, so everything needs to written a specific way. Please use the submission link below to send your scores (there's also a pastebin copy if needed), it's already formatted for you. If you need to work on the ballot over multiple days, you can copy it and save it on a notepad app, but please just make sure to keep the formatting intact, it'll make it easy for both you and me.
  7. You are encouraged to leave comments on as as many songs as you like. If you would like to include comments with your scores, just make sure they are formatted the proper way.

This is correct:

Moving Backwards: 3 it feels like the quality of this album is just Moving Backwards

These are incorrect:

Moving Backwards: 3: It feels like the quality of this album is moving Backwards

Moving Backwards: It feels like the quality of this album is moving backwards 3

Moving Backwards - 3 It feels like the quality of this album is moving backwards

Moving Backwards: 3 (It feels like the quality of this album is moving Backwards)

You can also leave comments on complete albums by adding a colon after the album name and then your comment (without a score), like so:

The Life of Pablo: never underestimate Ye to release a masterpiece

Cant wait to see all these scores, and relive 2016 again

SUBMIT HERE

(Pastebin of Empty Ballot in case submission link is down)

Scores are due in a little over a month with the reveal going to be around the end of April

Recommended If You Like thread - March 12, 2022

Posted: 12 Mar 2022 08:00 AM PST

If you're looking for a recommendation give a description/music link/artist so that other people will know what you want.

Example: "I want to hear an artist that sounds like old Kanye production" (you can get more specific but usually enough). And then someone will respond with recommendations X, Y, and Z.

You can also leave a top level comment recommending an artist/project/scene that you think others might like if they like X, Y, and Z.

Example: "You guys should check out DJ Mustard's mixtape Ketchup RIYL (recommended if you like) post-hyphy and minimalistic west coast beats"

Remember, the point of this thread is to share music, try not to post stuff that's already really popular unless it answers someone's question.

The more descriptive you guys are with your posts, the easier it is to help you find what you want. Just stating an artist's name isn't that helpful since you might only like one specific aspect of that artist's music.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams defends police officers who set off 16 y/o Bronx rapper C Blu's gun while conducting an illegal search and lied in testimony about it according to judge and bodycam footage: “I don’t believe those officers broke the law [..] That young man was shot because he had an illegal gun"

NY Post: 'Should not be demonized': Eric Adams defends cops in Bronx gun arrest of rapper

Mayor Eric Adams issued a full-throated defense of a pair of NYPD officers Thursday, saying they shouldn't be "demonized" — days after one of the cops' statements about a teen rapper's arrest were "wholly discredited" by a Bronx judge.

Speaking at an unrelated press conference, Adams weighed in on the gun bust of Camrin Williams, whose scuffle with cops in January led to the shooting of Officer Kaseem Pennant.

"I don't believe those officers broke the law," said Adams, who claimed cops searched Williams, a rapper known as "C Blu," after recognizing him from a prior gun arrest.

"We will never say breaking the law is a way of enforcing the law, but those officers that put their lives on the line to remove illegal guns off the street should not be demonized," the mayor added.

Hizzoner's comments follow a ruling Tuesday by Bronx Supreme Court Justice Naita Semaj, who found cops' narrative that Williams refused to take his hands out of his pockets during the Jan. 18 encounter — spurring the physical altercation in which the firearm went off — didn't line up with evidence.

Semaj said Pennant's backup, Officer Taulant Gjonbalaj, had no reason to search the teen, who is seen on body-camera footage with his hands up during the encounter.

"The court credits the testimony of Police Officer Pennant but finds Police Officer Gionbalaj to be largely incredible and unreliable," the judge wrote in a Tuesday ruling.

"Gjonbalaj testified that he thoroughly patted down [Williams] and did not feel any hard objects at any time, yet he still unzipped his coat and lifted his sweatshirt.

"The video from Police Officer Pennant's body camera clearly shows that the [Williams] was relatively calm and cooperative throughout the encounter. He did not attempt to reach for a weapon at any time, [Williams] hands were observed to be up and visible prior to the shooting."

The officers did not say they searched Williams because they recognized him from an earlier incident.

The judge added in her scathing opinion that it wasn't even clear Williams had caused the firearm to go off and ruled the case should be handled in family court.

Still, Adams blamed the teen for packing heat in the first place.

"That young man was shot because he had an illegal gun," he said. "That's why he was shot. That police officer was shot because that young man had an illegal gun for the second time."

Adams has used Williams' case in his push for Albany lawmakers to revisit recent criminal justice reforms — after a Bronx judge set bond for the teen instead of keeping him in custody.

After Williams was freed on bond, days after two NYPD cops were gunned down in Harlem, the mayor said "the current system is failing us."

Adams believes the law, aimed at reducing pre-trial detention, should include a dangerousness clause, allowing judges to detain people based on their perceived threat to the public.

Police said at the time that Williams' gun went off while he was wrestling with Pennant inside the Belmont building around 9:30 p.m. on Jan. 18.

Cops charged the teen with attempted murder, which was reduced by prosecutors to assault and gun charges.

The bullet pierced Williams' groin before hitting Pennant in the right leg, cops said.

Post doesn't clarify that despite Adams using this case to attack bail reform, C Blu was not granted bail because of bail reform.

Here's the thread for story about the footage

it seems like he's straight up lying about why they stopped him as well.
