SECRET SANTA MIXTAPE DISCUSSION THREAD

Posted: 01 Jan 2022 01:47 PM PST

Time to discuss our revival of the annual Secret Santa Mixtape Exchange for 2021! How was the tape you received? Was the custom art dank? Did it slap in the whip? What should we do differently next year?

If you are open to it, please post a link to your playlist that was made for you. I want to compile all of the playlists into a single Spotify (and Apple Music) playlist that has our collective recommendations for new music!

If you sent me your tape, I'll give you feedback asap. I received a ton to listen to so it'll take me a while.

If you didn't receive a tape, I'll bless you with mine here: Spotify Playlist and Apple Music Playlist

Edit #1: If somebody wants to make some dope custom album art for the collab playlist, chat me and send! Would be greatly appreciated ;-)

What’s an artist which is generally recognized as good but you just can’t get into?

Posted: 02 Jan 2022 06:51 AM PST

For me it's Mach-Hommy. I liked his features on Westside Gunn's recent projects, but I just couldn't get into his solo work. There was a lot of great production and lyricism but I found his singing pretty hit-and-miss. I still he's an interesting artist with some good tracks, but I personally don't find him as great as some think he is. That's just my opinion, though.

Which hip hop albums have the most stacked guest features?

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is an easy pick: Jay-Z, Pusha T, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj, Raekwon, Kid Cudi, Bon Iver, Chi the Prynce, RZA, John Legend.

What other rap albums have an absolutely stacked guest list?

Who’s your favorite rapper that isn’t considered “good”?

Posted: 01 Jan 2022 08:38 AM PST

Might be a weird question, so more or less what's a guilty pleasure of yours in terms of rappers in Hip Hop from any generation. For an example, my favorite rapper who isn't considered "good" or super lyrical is Crunchy Black from Three 6 Mafia. Nothing he ever spits is spectacular, pretty much subpar lyrically but something about his vocal melodies just has me rapping his verses out loud anyways. Any takers? Don't take this thread too seriously lol

Who do you think is going to blow up in 2022?

Posted: 01 Jan 2022 05:11 PM PST

Not your favorite underground rapper, not your friend who makes songs, not an opportunity to plug your own music. Who do you REALLY believe is going to take off in 2022 and become a household name? I've got my money on Baby Keem. He's already huge, but I think in 2022 he's got a chance to become a superstar, A-list rapper.

My wildcard pick would be Grip from Atlanta. He doesn't really have the current, cool sound that a lot of popular rappers have, but that's what makes him stand out to me. He's so talented as a lyricist and storyteller, and now that he's signed with Shady Records he has some actually resources behind him. I know people say Shady doesn't have the best track record with rising artists, but hopefully Grip's the one. Who are your picks?
