What is plug.dj?

plug.dj is a site where users take turns playing songs from youtube/soundcloud for each other and chat. Think crowdsourced radio, or a group passing the aux cord around one song at a time. The room can vote on how they like the song, chat about this or that and generally chill out and listen to tunes. It's a great way to find new music and share that song you've had on repeat. And you get to do it all with your fellow HHH fambruhs :)

General Guidelines

  1. Check the history before you play a song - The DJ history button is located here. It shows roughly the last 3 hours of songs that have been played in the room. If you play something that has been played recently enough to show up in the DJ history, you will be skipped by a staff member.

  2. No censored songs - Check the song you've picked before you play it. We don't want to hear a song where half of it is pauses. Explicit+video is awesome if you can get it, but we'd pick an explicit track without video over a censored video any day. If you play a censored track, you're getting skipped by a staff member.

  3. No pitch-shifted songs - Tagging on to the last rule. Just check the youtube vid you pick before you play it. We don't wanna hear the Alvin & the Chipmunks version of a song that some guy made to evade a copyright takedown, that'll be a skip.

  4. Play (mostly) hiphop - At the end of the day, this is the plug.dj room for hiphopheads. We do allow RnB to be played, as well as some EDM trap (or like remixes of rap songs), but for the most part otherwise, stick to playing hiphop. Memes are gonna get skipped by a staff member.

  5. Bitch don't kill my vibe - If everyone has been vibing out to some super chill songs, you should refrain from playing that Waka Flocka track. And if the last several people before you played some hype bangers, it's probably not the best time to play that instrumental Dilla track. Try to follow the flow.

  6. Don't instameh - Give a song a chance. No way you can judge a song within the first 5 seconds of it starting.

  7. Be active in chat - The staff does go through and kick afk people every once in a while. The way the afk timer works is based off of chat, so you need to say something in chat every once in a while to reset it. Besides, it's more fun when everyone is chatting! You'll get mentioned in chat if you've been afk for 45 minutes or so, if you don't respond you'll be kicked from the waitlist.

  8. No being a dick in chat - No spamming, no flaming other users, no racism. If you do, you will be kicked from the room by a staff member.

  9. Le rare gems - Try to not to play the most circlejerked songs from HHH. More fun if we get some stuff that isn't so overplayed.

FAQ/Get Started

How do I play songs?

You need to make a playlist (more instructions inside when you click that button) and then hit the join waitlist button.

How do I vote on songs?

Look at the bottom on the screen, on the right of the DJ booth. You can woot if you dig the song, meh if you want it to be skipped, and even grab it (save it to one of your playlists). If a song hits the required meh ratio, it will be skipped.

How do I check where I am in the waitlist?

Look at the top right of the screen. Shows your position, the total # of people in the waitlist, and the total # of people in the room.

How do I change my avatar/profile/settings?

Check the bottom right of the screen.

What's the deal with the people in chat with purple names and symbols?

Those people are room staff. There's levels to this shit, from resident DJ all the way to host. If you have been coming regularly for a long time, you might just get promoted too! How not to get promoted is to constantly beg for it though.

What if I really love/hate another user?

You can either friend them or ignore them by clicking on their avatar or name.

Anything I can do to enhance the plug experience?

Well...there is this extension called plug3 that can do some cool stuff. Check it out.

J. Cole wants us to boycott the NFL

Posted: 24 Sep 2017 10:48 AM PDT

J. Cole's reaction came after NFL's response to President Trump who said NFL Players that protest should be fired. Links to the video on USA Today and league responses, as well as additional tweets from Trump, can be found here:

USA Today: President Trump says NFL Players who Protest Anthem Should be Fired

Player, owner, NFL League Office and NFL Player's Association reactions to the statement, as well as additional tweets from President Trump.

More reactions from players, coaches, NFL media, and additional tweets from Trump

J. Cole on Twitter:

God bless every player that finds courage to kneel today. But the real power comes from you deciding to not watch. Your eyes translate to advertising money for the League and it's owners. Same ones who speak out against Trump today, are the same ones that denied a qualified man a job because he took a stand against injustice. You and me have the power to deny them our attention ($$ to them) until they make a wrong situation right. How do they make it right? I know there are people smarter than me with better answers. But here's one. Hire 3rd party investigator approved by NFLPA to determine if kap was denied a job unfairly as punishment for his stance (I know, I know) and compensate the man for his losses if they determine he was. Bare with me I'm just a rapper.. now look. Every day they stay quiet on this they're saying that they condone what's happening to Kap and the message it sends. Well, you have a choice on how you respond to that. You can choose to not watch. if a boycott doesn't force them to action, don't even trip. This is where the real flex happens. Black people spend a lot of money with NFL corporate sponsors. White people who don't fuck with white supremacy spend a lot of money too. So, next you turn your attention to these sponsors. Pick one of the biggest ones and say, "do you agree with black balling players when they speak out against oppression? If not, why are you spending all this money with a League that clearly condones that? ... You know what, I don't think I can spend my money with you no more until you fix this." Repeat this with another company, and another. Thats when the magic happens. And sadly, in this capitalistic world we live in, that's when your voice is heard, when you hurt the pockets. I respect whatever you decide to do. Watch or don't watch, whatever's in your heart but I'm not watching til it feel right. It was hard during preseason and the first week but then I was like, wait, is it actually hard? Some of us got grandparents that walked miles to work instead of riding bus, just to show the bus companies that they won't tolerate racism. So when I think about it like that it's very easy on Sunday to say, "Nope, I'm straight." This may be the biggest opportunity we have ever been presented to come together and show the world and ourselves our true economic power. Thank you Colin for your sacrifice. Ima stop it there. Peace and love to all, let's give energy to the solutions not the problem. Even if you don't rock with mine.

Revenge (XXXtentacion's merch) ripped me off for $60

Posted: 24 Sep 2017 12:23 PM PDT

I ordered a hat from the Revenge drop during XXXtentacion's tour (April 30th), they said they shipped it on May 29th, but my tracking number still says it's in preshipment (The starting dot on USPS). I've tried emails, DMs, everything and I can't get a response. My bank told me they can't do shit either. This shit was CAD to USD too so this sucks ass.

Hello /r/HipHopHeads! I've just launched a site that enables you to easily create discographies on Spotify and I'd love your feedback

Posted: 24 Sep 2017 07:48 AM PDT

Discogrify

TL;DR: A website for creating discographies on Spotify. Login via Spotify, search for an artist, and discography is magically created.

Description

On Spotify there's no way to add all of an artist's albums, singles and features into a single playlist other than doing it manually. Spotify does have an "Add to playlist" option beside albums but this is only really useful for albums by that artist. In hip hop, artists often feature on other artists tracks and in that case, you don't want all tracks from the album, but just the song they feature on. Trying to create a discography for an artist like Drake or Future, who have hundreds of individual features, would be painful. Even worse would be someone like Gucci Mane, who has over 3000 tracks on Spotify.

This is where Discogrify steps in. Using the site, all you have to do is login via Spotify and search for an artist and you'll be presented with an artist's entire Spotify discography. All tracks from all albums, singles, features and compilations. You can optionally edit the selection of tracks to exclude individual tracks or entire albums. Once you're happy with the selection, simply publish the playlist and it will be in your library.

Usage

First things first, UI design is not my forte so I'm hoping for a pass on that one. Any suggestions are more than welcome. Also the site is not optimised for mobile but will still function the same. Secondly, If you notice anything wrong with the site, please leave a comment so I can fix the issue :)

Anyway, there are only a few steps to using the site:

  1. Click the "Login via Spotify" button, which will redirect you to the Spotify authentication page.
  2. Once authenticated, you'll be redirected back to Discogrify where you can perform a search. Results will appear in a list below the search box.
  3. Once you select an artist from the list, the site will compile every track on Spotify containing that artist into a single list and display it in the results view.
  4. In the results view, each row represents an album, be it by your searched artist or another artist. If you click on an album, it will expand display a list of tracks. You can select/deselect individual tracks or entire albums. This step is not mandatory
  5. Selecting "Publish playlist" will create the playlist and add it to your account.

Future work

At the moment this is just a working prototype and if it's seeing good usage then I have a few improvements I'd like to make:

  • Popular artists: Display a list of the most searched for artists
  • How-to/Guide/Landing page: A brief intro about what the site does and how to use it.
  • Add multiple artists to one playlist: The option to include multiple artists in one playlist. This would enable you to catalog, for example, all tracks by each DOOM moniker or all tracks by each individual member of Wu-Tang
  • Automatic filtering of duplicates and remixes: I'm aware that there are duplicates in the results and the reason some albums/tracks are released differently in different regions and all version are returned by default on Spotify. Also the results don't consider a single that also exists on an album and will return them both by default. Of course you can fix all of this manually in the results view but it would be nice to have it done automatically.
  • Alter existing user playlists: I'd like to be able to add tracks to an existing playlist rather than one just created by the tool
  • Select/Deselect all: A checkbox to select/deselect all results

For the nerds

I wrote the front end in Vue.js and the back end in Go. As you can tell I'm not a UX/UI guy so if anyone has suggestions then I'm all ears. I'm open to pull requests if anyone's up for it.

I also used Redis for caching search results and artist discographies. Not only does this speed things up but it also means that that only unique requests are sent to Spotify's API, as opposed to each one by each user. This makes hitting the rate limit essentially impossible given the maximum number of potential concurrent users of a niche site like this. Cached data expires after a week, allowing for new releases to be included.

As an artist I've always thought a hip hop collective was cool asf. Like surrounding yourself with artist with similar goals and ambitions. Thing is my neighborhood only listen to yachty and uzi and anything in rap caviar. Like I'm tryna link with some MF DOOM, kevin abstract, Big L, Capital STEEZ, Earl Sweatshirt. Know I mean? So hmu if you in San Diego, LA, or somewhere in SoCal.
