Artists that have gone thru obvious growth (artistic vs. personal)- who do ya'll fuck with that you think has demonstrated this in their music?

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 09:54 AM PDT

My question: what artists in the genre have obvious artistic and/or personal growth throughout their discographies?

One of my fav artists is Mac Miller- esp WMWTSO, Faces, Swimming- and one of the reasons that I enjoy him as an artist so much is because you can clearly see how much he grew and changed as an artist throughout his career. He started as a young kid making what I would call frat boy rap, progressed thru some very experimental shit, and his last several albums were very introspective and personal. All of his music was great, but you can very clearly see how he grew and changed his approach & subject matter as he got older. Just got me thinking who else has shown this sort of thing in their music. I've heard some people say Tyler has, and I definitely see some of that although I would argue maybe to a lesser degree than Mac. Curious on HHH's thoughts!

[DISCUSSION] What events in hiphop history stand out to you the most?

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 01:33 PM PDT

Major or minor, which events in the genre's history stood out to you the most? Why are these events important or meaningful to the culture and/or to you personally?

These could be significant events that were defining moments in hiphop, personally impactful events that changed the way you look at the genre, moments in time that affected hiphop as well as life outside of music, or anything in between.

Examples:

Discussion questions:

  • What was the general reception of what happened at the time of the event? Did it differ from how we look at it now?

  • Why was this event so important? Was it the event itself, or was it due to the context of what was going on in the world when it happened?

  • Are any recent events comparable at all to the event you named? Why or why not?

  • What effect did the event have on the reputation of hiphop? Was it a moment of pride and success, or did it leave a shameful stain on the culture in the eyes of outside viewers and listeners?

[DISCUSSION] What separates an “old-school” artist from making a new album sound good or bad?

Posted: 03 Oct 2021 01:17 PM PDT

It seems like every time an artist who has had a prime in the 90s to early 00s releases a new project, it either establishes that the said artist still has it in them to create a solid project (i.e. King's Disease 1/2 or We Got It from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service) or that they are very mediocre or just straight up bad (i.e. Ice Cube, Busta Rhymes, Big Boi, etc.). What elements or factors determine if an "old-school" artist's album is good, bad, or just bland and forgettable, and what examples can you provide to back it up?"
